Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety during Friday’s meeting approved the city accepting a $50,000 grant from the Indiana State Department of Health.
The grant will allow the city to establish a bicycle and pedestrian-friendly master plan.
The city will need to obtain a consultant to design the master plan, according to City Planner Jeremy Skinner.
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer said city officials will travel to Fort Wayne Monday to look at bike paths in the city.
Thallemer said a bicycle advisory committee has been established.
In other business, the board approved Warsaw Police Department applying for a U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services $250,000 grant.
The grant will allow the department to apply for the funding that, if approved, will allow the department to hire two additional officers, according to Scott Whitaker, WPD chief.
If the grant is approved and the new officers are hired, there would be a maximum of 38 WPD officers, Whitaker said.
Jennifer Whitaker, Warsaw human resources director, said she supported the hiring of two police officers.
“In police and fire we always need to get ahead of the hiring game because our selection process is getting thinner and thinner every year,” Whitaker said.
“In police and fire hiring its more competitive and we are competing against the bigger cities who pay more and have better benefits.”
Whitaker said there have been two WPD employees who have given intent to retire, and will be leaving in the next couple of months.
The board approved a salary for Sheila Wieringa to serve as park board secretary at $30 per meeting.
Brent Fifer was approved to serve as a full-time firefighter at a bi-weekly salary of $1,628.20.
The board approved lake association agreements for Pike, Center, and Winona Lake Preservation Association.
The board also approved Warsaw Parks Department event contracts for Culture Fest, Blues and Barbecue concert, and the Family Carnival and a stagehand contract for the classic rock, blues and barbecue, country concert, and culture fest.
The board approved an agreement to provide accounting support services from H.J. Umbaugh & Associates for the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory.
The board approved a $220 contract for the Kosciusko County Community Fair for an annual booth rental for public awareness for wastewater and stormwater.
The board approved a Housing Opportunities request for waiver of a $1,750 sewer tap fee at 505 Alward St.
The board approved a $9,249 contract between the city and Jack Doheny Supplies Inc. to purchase a self-leveling camera television pipe for the Warsaw Wastewater Utility company.
The contract was approved pending Thallemer receiving information on the cost and usage amount of the camera television pipe.[[In-content Ad]]
