4th Annual Day Of Helping Set For June 25

This is the fourth year the church at 902 College Ave., Winona Lake, has offered the assistance to anyone in need.
Coordinator Rick Swaim said, “The idea came from a book by Brandon Hatmaker called ‘Barefoot Church.’ And we wanted to do something to make a difference in the community, being hands and feet for Christ. I knew that the Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church had done it for years in the winter time. So I talked to (the church’s associate pastor) David Rankin.”
For the children, there will be a bounce house and kid’s activities. Hot dogs and popcorn will be served on the church’s porch, and there will be a children’s clothing giveaway. People will be able to write thank-you notes to servicemen, which will be collected and sent to troops stationed overseas.
All of it is free.
“We’ll have some food we’re buying,” Swaim said. “We’ll have nails done, manicures done. Haircuts. Pictures. There’s a lady doing sewing demonstrations to teach people some basic sewing skills. There’s a local banker who’s going to help those who have questions and want help with budgeting, taking care of their money.”
He said it’s offered to anyone who has a need.
Posters about the event have been posted at Combined Community Services and the Salvation Army. Fliers went out with the last Warsaw Community Schools Boomerang Backpack, thanks to coordinator Tracey Akers.
“Part of the problem is getting families to know about it,” Swaim said.
While the church doesn’t keep a number of how many people it’s served each year at Day of Helping, Swaim estimated they helped 75 to 80 people in 2015.
“We’d love for that to be 100 to 125, to serve 85 families. We’re going to have food I hope to serve 75, 80, 85 families to give away. That will be corn, beans, some pasta, some rice, just some basic staples for people,” he said.
Swaim said they still need someone to volunteer their time, even if it’s just for an hour, to come and cut hair.
There will be about 35 to 40 members of the Winona Lake church helping with the Day’s events.
