According to a crash report from Warsaw Police Department, John K. Churchill, 61, of 718 W. Market St., Warsaw, was traveling eastbound in his 1995 Infinity on Market Street at 7:24 p.m.
He had just left his residence a few houses away and was approaching the intersection of Pine Street. While driving on Market Street, a small female child stepped out from a bush on to the roadway from the south side, northbound, according to the crash report.
Churchill stated he immediately tried to stop but was unable to avoid striking the child.
A witness stated he was sitting on the front porch at 506 W. Market St. and saw the driver’s vehicle traveling eastbound at roughly 30 to 35 miles per hour.
The witness said he saw the small female child on the south side of the road near the intersection of Pine Street. The child looked both ways, and a vehicle passed her and she did not check again and stepped out in front of the driver’s vehicle. The child was struck by the front bumper area of the vehicle and was thrown several feet and landed in the roadway, the report states.
Witnesses were walking together eastbound on Market Street. They said they observed the little girl near the intersection of Pine Street. She looked for traffic, a car passed and then she just walked north into the road and was immediately struck by the driver’s vehicle.
The victim was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital and her name has not been released.
A WPD officer said upon their arrival they observed the female child sitting upright, slumped over on the south side of Market Street at the intersection of Pine Street. He cleared the area and laid her on her back securing her neck. He could see she had abrasions on her face and she was going in an out of crying. The mother was next to the child upon the officer’s arrival.
Churchill’s vehicle didn’t sustain any visible damage.
