Saturday, 4-H blacksmith leaders, along with members of Echoes of the Past antique tractor club, began building a new blacksmith shop at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds. Tammy Wise, one of the project leaders, said the group plans to hold blacksmithing demonstrations at this year's county fair.
Wise said 4H'ers working on their blacksmith projects will learn the basic techniques from several project instructors, including ferrier Jerry Clase, blacksmith Mike Yazel, Jake Wise and Camden. Each member will work on his or her own projects, which will vary in difficulty based on his or her age.
Preparation to begin the project has been in the works since August. Wise said in the past couple of years, the blacksmith project has been gaining steam in the state's 4-H programs. She said Kosciusko County's program is one of the first in the area.
"Right now we know of three in Indiana," she said.
