Two people are in custody after allegedly trying to pass bad checks in Warsaw. One of the two led police on a high-speed chase before her vehicle was disabled and she was apprehended.

Tracey Elizabeth Davis, 29, of Bristol, is being held without bond in the Kosciusko County Jail on charges of forgery, attempted theft, receiving stolen property and fleeing law enforcement.

According to a press release issued by the Warsaw Police Department, Davis attempted to cash a check at 2:18 p.m. Thursday at the Lake City Bank branch on Commerce Drive. Bank officials refused to cash the check because it appeared to be similar to fraudulent checks that have been presented at other LCB branches and at banks throughout northern Indiana.

Davis left the bank before police arrived, but, several minutes later, officials at the LCB branch on West Lake Street reported the same woman was at that facility attempting to cash the same check.

Police determined the check was stolen from a residential mailbox in Fort Wayne.

When police arrived at the LCB westside branch, Davis' silver Chevrolet S-10 pickup was still in the drive-through lane. The suspect, upon seeing the officer, left the bank and reportedly refused to stop for Ptl. Doug Light.

A pursuit was then initiated and Davis reportedly continued to flee, traveling westbound on Old Road 30 to Fox Farm Road. She then continued to U.S. 30 and drove west to CR 350W, where she cut back south to Old Road 30. At Old Road 30 and CR 875W, near Etna Green, Davis' truck left the roadway and struck an embankment, causing damage to the vehicle's undercarriage. Davis reportedly continued to flee from police, with officers from the Warsaw Police Department, Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police in pursuit.

While still trying to evade police, Davis returned eastbound on Old Road 30 in excess of 90 mph, police said. Near the intersection of CR 875W, officers from the ISP and Mentone Police Department placed "stop sticks" in the road and the tires of Davis' vehicle were flattened by the devices. Davis then pulled her vehicle over and allegedly fled on foot. She was apprehended a short distance later after a reported struggle with police.

The other person arrested was Julian Coleman, 25, of Goshen. Police determined through their investigation that Coleman was dropped off at or near both LCB locations to apparently act as a lookout for Davis.

Coleman was detained near the west branch of the bank and admitted accompanying Davis to Warsaw, police said. He allegedly was running toward Davis' pickup when she drove away and left him behind. He apparently threw his hands up in frustration, then walked toward Penguin Point, where employees notified police that a possible suspect was in the business.

Davis also reportedly implicated Coleman for his involvement in the possession of stolen checks and attempts to cash them. He was charged with aiding in a theft and receiving stolen property. He was released from the KCJ after posting a $2,000 bond.

Officials said Davis is on federal parole for similar activities and Coleman is on probation through Elkhart County for a weapons charge. Coleman also has felony convictions for robbery and sexual misconduct, police said.

Police impounded the pickup, and inspection of the rented vehicle driven by Davis revealed numerous checks and mail apparently stolen from mailboxes in Kosciusko County and across northern Indiana.

Davis reportedly admitted to other check-cashing attempts at area banks during the past month.

The case remains under investigation. Other area law enforcement agencies, the office of federal parole at South Bend and federal postal inspectors are expected to take part in the investigation. [[In-content Ad]]
