WINONA LAKE - Against quality opposition, one short five-minute stretch can cost a team. The Grace College women's basketball team learned that Wednesday as the Lady Lancers attempted to upset the No. 4 team in the country, the St. Francis Cougars.

A 17-0 first-half run gave the Cougars a lead they would never relinquish as they held off Grace 69-59. The game signified the end of the first half of conference competition and St. Francis came away unblemished with a 7-0 record. The Lancers, on the other hand, went 2-5 with victories over last-place Marian and second-place Goshen.

The Lancers held their own early, taking leads of 16-10 and 18-12. But with nine minutes left and Grace still clinging to a six-point advantage, St. Francis took over.

During the next five minutes, the Cougars held Grace scoreless and forced seven turnovers. The Lancers could only manage one shot attempt in the time frame. St. Francis knocked down numerous shots.

Even after a miss, the Cougars came away with the offensive rebound, tallying six during that stretch of time.

When the dust settled, St. Francis led 29-18. The Lancers got as close as seven points before the break, but the Cougars scored the last four points of the half for a 33-22 lead.

St. Francis led by as many as 25 points in the second half, taking a 65-40 lead late. But Grace ended the game on a 19-4 run to make the score respectable.

"We turned the ball over continuously in the first half," Grace coach Scott Schramm said. "And our field goal percentage killed us. If we correct those two things, I'm feeling pretty good."

The Lancers did have 17 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, 29 for the game, and shot just 31 percent in the first half. But Grace also beat St. Francis in a number of areas, most notably rebounding. The Lancers won 50-33 on the glass, including 21 offensive rebounds. But many of those boards came on easy layups that the Lancers missed and were then in good position to rebound and try again.

"In the second half, we had a little more consistency," Schramm said. "It's a confidence factor. Saturday against Goshen, we played with confidence. If we do that, we can play with teams."

Goshen had a 14-game home winning streak snapped by the Lancers as Grace jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and held on for a 67-65 win.

"We did a lot of nice things," Schramm said. "We can't let the fact that we lost diminish that. We didn't back down."

Allison Davis led Grace with 13 points. Amy Doron had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Sarah Orem grabbed a game-high 11 boards.

Grace (11-10, 2-5) will be at Bethel Wednesday at 7 p.m. Grace lost to the Pilots earlier in the year 78-65.
