11-Year-Old Recovers From Alcohol-Poisoning Incident

An 11-year-old Larwill girl is in fair condition after being airlifted Sunday to Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, with suspected alcohol poisoning. This was one of at least three incidents of underage drinking investigated over the weekend by local police.
According to a Warsaw Police Department report, the girl was found alone lying on vomit-dampened carpet in the back room of a residence in the 300 block of south Columbia Street. Others in the house, including adults and juveniles, at first denied that the girl drank any alcoholic beverages at that location.
However, after police explained the seriousness of the situation and that the girl's condition was possibly life threatening, at least one person at the home told police that the girl was "guzzling" from a bottle of rum prior to her mother arriving at the residence and finding her in a near-unconscious state. A blood test taken at Kosciusko Community Hospital revealed the preteen's blood-alcohol level to be .30 percent - three times the level at which a person is deemed intoxicated in Indiana.
The girl was reportedly in Warsaw for weekend visitation with her father and, when the child's mother went to pick her up, the father said she had gone to the Columbia Street residence with friends. The father told police he did not know his daughter's whereabouts from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The incident was reported at 10:33 p.m.
The girl was first taken to KCH, where she was reportedly unresponsive and being assisted in her breathing when she was airlifted to Parkview. Her condition has since improved and she is reported to be breathing on her own.
Charges also are pending against an 18-year-old male at the residence who tested positive for alcohol consumption. The case has been forwarded to the welfare and probation departments for further review. Two adults allegedly present when the girl was drinking could also face charges.
In a Friday incident, a Winamac teen suffered cuts to her arms after allegedly punching out windows at a South Lake Street residence, where she and two other teens were reportedly found intoxicated, and the father of one of the teens was later arrested for contributing to the delinquency of minors.
Candice Lynn Day, 19, of Winamac, was treated at KCH and released after the 11:04 p.m. Friday incident. She apparently became upset after being locked outside the house when two males inside felt she was becoming "obnoxious" after drinking alcohol.
Day was then charged with illegal possession or consumption of alcohol by a minor and disorderly conduct. She was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail and held on $175 bond.
Also arrested were Dustan Dale Bradley, 19, of 613 S. Lake St., Warsaw, and Wesley Boyd Hale, 19, North Judson. Bradley was charged with illegal possession or consumption of alcohol by a minor and disorderly conduct, with bond set at $175, and Hale was charged with illegal possession or consumption of alcohol by a minor and making a false police report (he allegedly told police he was over age 21), with bond set at $250.
When Bradley's father, Jerry Dale Bradley, 40, arrived home and found his house in disarray, he contacted police and was then arrested and charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of minors.
Police said that the younger Bradley implicated his father by making a written statement that the elder Bradley knew there was going to be a party there and that Jerry Bradley purchased the alcoholic beverages.
Also on Friday, while one Warsaw officer was taking a report from three people alleging harassment, it was revealed that the suspect was at a Gable Drive residence and that several underage people were drinking alcoholic beverages there.
When police arrived at the residence, a woman opened the front door and a man, upon seeing an officer, reportedly attempted to run out the back door. A officer was already at the back door, though, and prevented the male from leaving.
Arrested on charges of illegal possession or consumption of alcohol by a minor and booked into the KCJ were Brandon Derek Roberts, 18, of 1928 E. Market St., Warsaw; Gary Michael Vervaet, 19, of 2281 Stonebridge Road, Warsaw; and Angela Kay Cox, 19, of 1329 Gable Drive, Warsaw. Bond for each was set at $175.
Also charged with illegal possession or consumption of alcohol by a minor was Linzy Nichole Cox, 17, of 1329 Gable Drive, Warsaw. She was left with a nondrinking adult in the residence. [[In-content Ad]]
