Lady Squires Win In Wabash County Tournament
WABASH – Manchester edged Northfield 31-30 in the opening round of the Wabash County girls basketball tournament Thursday at Southwood High School.
Bailey Sewell led the Lady Squires with 12 points, and Cierra Carter had nine. Sydney Day pulled down 14 rebounds in the game.
Trailing by seven points at halftime, Northfield came back to tie the game at 21 entering the fourth quarter, setting up a dramatic finish.
“The Wabash County Tournament is one of the best tournaments in the state,” Manchester head coach Jacob Everett said. “It was a hard-fought game on both sides, and we were fortunate enough to come out on top.”
Manchester advances to play Wabash, a 43-42 winner over Southwood, in the championship game at 6:30 tonight.

Early Deficit Dooms Manchester In 63-43 Loss
WABASH – Host Southwood broke out to a 26-6 lead after the first quarter, and Manchester never recovered in a 63-43 boys basketball loss in the opening round of the Wabash County Tournament Thursday.
David McAtee hit four three-point shots on the way to a team-high 16 points for the Squires.
Manchester (1-7) will play Northfield (2-6), a 55-51 loser to Wabash, in the consolation game at 4:45 this afternoon.

Valley Falls To Oregon-Davis In Tourney Opener
FULTON – Despite three players in double figures, Tippecanoe Valley fell 64-51 to Oregon-Davis in the opening round of the Caston Tournament Thursday.
Alec Craig paced the Vikings with 16 points. Jarod Duzenbery had 15 points and Keith Wright had 13 for Valley.
The Vikings (3-5) played host Caston, a 38-36 loser to South Bend Career Academy, late this morning. The winner advances to the fifth-place game at 6 p.m. at Caston High School, and the loser to the seventh-place game at 6 p.m. at Caston Elementary.

LCA Splits In Cougar Classic
WINONA LAKE – Lakeland Christian split its first two games in its Cougar Classic boys basketball tournament at Grace College’s Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center Thursday.
In the Cougars’ 50-33 first-round win over South Bend Trinity, Josh McDaniel scored 23 points, including four three-pointers. Jake Harmon added seven points, with Landon Twombly and Elijah Raymond scoring six points each.
Noah Twombly was LCA’s leading scorer with nine points in a 63-34 loss to Covenant Christian of DeMotte. Raymond and Landon Twombly added six more points each in the game.
The Cougars (5-5) will take on Calumet Christian in the third-place game at 2:30 this afternoon at the Manahan OCC.
Lady Cougars Split
WINONA LAKE – Lakeland Christian Academy split its two girls basketball games in the first two rounds of the Cougar Classic Thursday.
In a 41-26 win over South Bend Trinity, Hope Fancil scored 17 points, and Heather Plastow added nine. Melissa Goss and Jess Slone added four points each.
Fancil scored 19 points in the Lady Cougars’ 43-35 second-round loss to Covenant Christian. Goss had nine points, Slone had five and Plastow had two points in the game.
The Lady Cougars (6-7) took on Clinton Christian early this afternoon in the third-place game of the tournament.
Warsaw’s Hatch Advances
MISHAWAKA – Warsaw senior Kyle Hatch was the only Tiger wrestler to advance to today’s medal round in the 32-team Al Smith Invitational at Mishawaka High School.
Hatch, wrestling at 152 pounds, opened the day with a technical fall in round one. He then picked up pins in the next two rounds to keep himself in the championship bracket.
Tiger sophomore Jose Grimmett (132) and senior Christian Taylor (138) picked up first-round wins before being eliminated in the consolation bracket.
The tournament concludes today.
