BOURBON – The Warsaw Lady Tigers, more specifically senior Dayton Groninger, did the majority of their damage during the second and third quarters Tuesday night in a 53-31 win at Triton.
Warsaw led the Lady Trojans 13-10 early in the second quarter, but began pulling away and eventually outscored the hosts 29-10 during the middle two frames.
During that span of 16 minutes, Groninger scored 19 of her game-high 26 points.
The standout senior also finished the game with nine rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Lady Tigers, who improved to 11-1 this season and 24-3 in the all-time series with Triton.
The Lady Trojans, who notched wins over Warsaw in 1984, 1986 and 2015, fell to 3-11 on the season.
“Dayton needed to have a game like this tonight to come out and start hitting her shots again, and scoring for us,” said Warsaw coach Michelle Harter. “That just helps open it up for everybody else when she’s doing those things.”
Groninger eclipsed the 800-point plateau for her career and sits at 825.
A total of 12 players entered the game for the Lady Tigers, with 10 of them scoring.
Madi Graham scored seven points in the win, while Kacy Bragg added four points, and sisters Kennedy Patton and Kaylee Patton chipped in with three points each.
Page Desenberg, Mariah Rivera, Kenzie Welk, Abby Glass and Emma Bohnenkamper all scored two points for Warsaw.
The Lady Tigers led 13-8 after one quarter of play, 27-14 at halftime and 42-18 at the end of the third quarter.
“Early in the game, I thought we were being a little over-aggressive at times, reaching and getting ourselves out of position and giving them easy looks,” said Harter.
“We talked about making sure we have good ball pressure, and then reading their shoulders and moving how they’re turning, and picking and choosing times to make steals. I thought the girls did a better job of backing off just a tad and making them make the mistakes, and then capitalizing on it.”
The Lady Trojans were guilty of 17 turnovers, which led to 21 points for Warsaw.
The Lady Tigers committed just eight turnovers, which Triton turned into two points.
Fourteen of Triton’s turnovers were in the second and third quarters.
“They scored 21 points off turnovers, we scored two, so that’s a 19-point difference,” said Triton coach Adam Heckaman. “Until the last-second three, we were only down by 19 ... so if you do the math, you can see that was the difference. The turnovers were big. That’s when they went on their run, when we struggled against their press. I do think a lot of it was self-inflicted, just not making good decisions.
“Warsaw is good. They rotate, they cover well, but we just made some bad passes and basically assisted them for some layups.”
Junior Hannah Wanemacher led Triton with 15 points, while classmate Nicole Sechrist scored seven points, and sophomore Kaitlin Bailey and freshman Whytnie Miller tallied four points each.
Senior Quinn Downing rounded out the Lady Trojans’ scoring with a free throw.
The Lady Trojans won’t play again until Jan. 4 when they host Oregon-Davis.
Despite the 22-point margin, Heckaman believes playing teams like Warsaw and 3A No. 7 Valley will help his team in the long run.
“I think the girls are seeing that against teams like Warsaw and against teams like Valley that we can play with them in spurts,” said Heckaman. “We’ve got to put a complete game together, that’s something we’ve got to continue to work on.
“But if we can with a caliber of Warsaw and a caliber of a Valley for almost a full half and occasionally in the second half, I think the girls understand that means more than bringing in a team we can beat by 30 or 40. They know going forward we’re going to be playing teams that are little more on our level, and this experience is going to help us in that.”
Warsaw is in action again Friday with a game at 3A No. 10 Norwell.

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves. Each of the four players were asked the same eight questions. Below are each of their answers.
