Police Respond To Weather-Related Accidents
By Michael Anderson-manderson@timesuniononline.com
According to Kosciusko County Central Dispatch numbers provided this morning by Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Chad Hill, there were 41 injury accidents, 146 property damage accidents and 91 slide-offs from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. this morning. None of the injuries were critical or fatal, he said.
“It was like an ice skating rink,” Hill said.
Even the officers assisting with the slide-offs faced treacherous conditions, he said.
At about 8:45 a.m. Saturday, KCSD deputies were assisting with a couple of slide-offs on U.S. 30 near CR 450E.
Pierceton Fire Chief Gordon Baker stopped to assist with his emergency lights on. Baker was trying to slow traffic.
As Baker sat in his vehicle, a Ford Taurus rammed the fire department vehicle from behind. The Taurus was driven by Joseph Dimaggio, 24, St. John, according to a report from the KCSD.
Baker was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital with minor injuries to his back. Baker has since been released, Hill said.
Shortly after midnight Saturday, another law enforcement vehicle was hit on U.S. 30, but that time the car was unoccupied. Matt Holderman, KCSD deputy, was assisting with a stranded vehicle when a car driven by Alize Smith, 20, Merrillville, hit Holderman’s vehicle, according a to a report from KCSD. No one was injured.
Hill said even though the Indiana Department of Transportation salts the road, the cold temperatures cause it to “glaze over,” creating dangerous conditions on the state highways.
Northern Indiana had record low temperatures over the weekend. Hill said people should use caution while driving in hazardous conditions.
“Reduce your speed or even follow at further distance than normal.” he said.
