Whitko Extends Streak With Win At Manchester

The triangle-and-two defense worked to some degree, but icy shooting from the Lady Squires played a big part in Whitko’s 52-27 win in Three Rivers Conference girls basketball action Friday night.
Reiff and Cumberland had just 15 shots and 20 points between them, but other Lady Wildcats stepped up. Ellie Snep had 10 points, and freshman Brielle Harrison came off the bench to provide some punch with eight points.
Manchester also insured it was a relatively low-scoring game by running clock when it didn’t have a fast break opportunity.
“I don’t know that is was as much ugly offense as it wasn’t our typical scorers getting most of the points,” Whitko head coach Brandon Bradley said. “We played against a triangle-and-two last year, and even the year before that, but it’s the first time we’ve seen it this year. It’s my fault we haven’t practiced against it more this year.
“But Aly and Brianna did a great job of keeping their head. They were never rattled offensively, they figured out ways to score when they could, and they got everybody else involved. The others did a nice job of slashing to the high post and working the short corner. They got some good looks.
“I don’t think we shot a bad percentage, and we didn’t turn the ball over a lot. It was a slower game with fewer possessions.”
Whitko held the Lady Squires to nine field goals, and Manchester went close to six minutes between the end of the third quarter and the first four minutes of the fourth without a bucket.
“The thing I was most impressed with is after halftime we did a nice job of finishing the game, especially the first half of the fourth quarter. We expanded the lead each quarter, and did a nice job of just finishing that game,” Bradley said.
“They’re a scrappy, tough-nosed team. I noticed they went really small with their best weapons, and I thought our bigs did a nice job rotating defensively.”
Manchester assistant coach Joshua Troyer, filling in for head coach Jacob Everett who missed the game due to a death in his family, knew the Lady Squires had a tall order coming in to Friday night.
“We knew Reiff and Cumberland were great basketball players. We knew we needed to limit the opportunities they had to shoot the basketball,” Troyer said. “If we could get a score early in transition we were going to take it, but they’re a really good defensive team. They’re the No. 1 ranked team in 2A, and they definitely proved it.
“I was proud of our girls. We asked a lot of them. Those two were averaging 39 points a game, and we held them to 20. So we’re proud of that defensive effort. We just struggled to make shots.”
Troyer said he feels like it’s a matter of confidence for the Lady Squire offense. Cierra Carter had nine points and Sydney Day scored five for Manchester.
“We have a great group of girls who believe in themselves defensively. We just need to get that same belief on the offensive end. We believe they’re capable of it, it’s just a matter of finding that confidence,” he said.
The junior varsity game went to Manchester 42-24 over Whitko. Raniessa Shambarger had 10 points and Kiera Hatfield eight for the Lady Squire JV. Anna Ousley and Kayla Schipper paced Whitko with six points each.
Whitko’s varsity squad improved to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the TRC going in to tonight’s game at defending 4A champion and ninth-ranked Penn. The Lady Kingsmen’s lone loss in 10 games was to Warsaw, 40-33, on Nov. 22. Three nights later Whitko took a 40-37 win over Warsaw. Penn is coming off a 58-7 drubbing of South Bend Clay Wednesday night.
Manchester fell to 6-5, 1-2 in the conference, and hosts Southwood on Friday.
