SYRACUSE – A man is in custody after an eight-hour standoff with police north of Syracuse, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.
Shawn Arnold, 25, Wawaka, was arrested at 12:53 p.m. Wednesday.
At about 4:30 a.m., officers responded to an alarm at Layton Pergrem’s residence at 12783 CR 52 in Elkhart County. Police found Arnold hiding in the attic, but he refused officers’ orders to exit the attic.

Eventually, police sent in a K9 unit to help apprehend Arnold. He  was bitten by a police dog and taken into custody.
Arnold suffered bite marks to his left arm and was treated for his injuries, the release said.
He is  being held at the Elkhart County Correctional Facility and is facing charges of burglary, resisting law enforcement and possession of stolen property. He is also being held on a Noble County warrant for domestic battery and strangulation, according to the news release.
Indiana State Police, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Syracuse Police Department, Goshen Police Department, Elkhart City Police Department, Nappanee City Police Department and Elkhart County Emergency Management assisted in the standoff.
