AKRON – With a strong start to the second half, the Class 3A No. 7 Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings were able to pull away from the Triton Lady Trojans Wednesday night.
Clinging to a 22-18 lead at halftime, Valley opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run and outscored Triton 21-8 in the third quarter en route to a 53-35 win in non-conference girls basketball action.
With the win, Valley improved to 8-2, while Triton fell to 2-9.
The Lady Vikings have won the last three meetings with the Lady Trojans and 6 of the last 10.
“I think (Triton coach) Adam (Heckaman) does an excellent job,” said Valley coach Chris Kindig, who needs just two more victories to reach the 100-win plateau.
“I really expected it to be a battle. We didn’t play particularly well in that first half, and they did a real nice job, I thought, of setting the tempo. We weren’t able to get out on the break very much.
“We did create a few turnovers with our press, and I thought we did a pretty good job with it, especially at the end of the half when we were up four points. We got a couple steals in the third quarter off the press, and you look up at the scoreboard and we’ve got a 13 or 15 point lead. We did a really nice job in the third quarter of putting more pressure on them.”
Triton committed 20 turnovers in the loss, with those miscues leading to 22 points for Valley.
The Lady Vikings outscored the Lady Trojans 31-17 in the second half.
Still, Heckaman was happy with some of the things he saw out of his squad.
“It was a vast improvement of where we have been playing,” said Heckaman, whose team has scored more than 40 points just three times in 11 games this season.
“The first group, those kids, I thought played their hearts out. They executed very well. I know we ended up with 20 turnovers, but against a team like that it could have been a whole lot worse. I thought we did a better job taking care of the ball and getting opportunities to score. We could have gone into the half only down two (points). We missed two bunnies right there at the end of the half.
“Great job overall of everybody getting out there and giving us some things. It was great to see Nicole Sechrist emerge as the player she can be. I liked seeing that. If she continues on that roll, I think we’ve, hopefully, found a second legitimate scorer.”
Hannah Wanemacher led Triton with a game-high 19 points, while Secrist chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Valley used a balanced scoring attack, getting 15 points from Anne Secrest and 12 from both Meredith Brouyette and Sophie Bussard.
Addy Miller scored seven points in the win, while Hannah Dunn scored six, and Asia O’Connor rounded out Valley’s scoring with a free throw.
The Lady Vikings are in action again Friday when they host Three Rivers Conference rival North Miami.
Triton travels to Caston Saturday for a Hoosier North Athletic Conference contest.

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves. Each of the four players were asked the same eight questions. Below are each of their answers.
