In a 44-40 win over the Vikings in overtime, Warsaw was just 10 of 30 from the floor overall, 3 of 9 from three-point range, but made 21 of 27 attempts at the charity stripe.
Warsaw was particularly good at the line in the four-minute extra session, making 8 of 11 attempts after the teams were knotted 34-34 at the end of regulation.
Saturday's win came 24 hours after the Tigers were just 12 of 40 from the field in a 50-37 loss at Homestead.
Warsaw coach Doug Ogle was happy to see his team show some grit and grind out a win at Huntington North Arena.
The Tigers improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Vikings, who were 7 of 10 from the free throw line in the loss, fell to 2-2.
“That's a good win for us, because we just kind of had to grind one out,” said Ogle. “It's just good for our psyche to win a game like that. It helps our confidence a little bit. We've got a long way to go, but for us to press on and persevere, I was proud of our resolve.”
Huntington North led the low-scoring contest 6-5 after one quarter of play, the teams were tied 18-18 at halftime, and the Vikings took a 31-25 advantage into the fourth quarter.
From that point on, the home team struggled to score, as Huntington North scored just nine points over the final 12 minutes of the game.
Warsaw outscored the Vikings 19-9 during that span, beating the Vikings for the fourth consecutive season and for the ninth time in the last 10 meetings.
“We played a little smarter, maybe, defensively as the game went on,” said Ogle. “I thought our interior defense was good in the second half. They got the ball inside, but I thought our defense was stout, and we didn’t foul them a bunch. That was good. They got into the 1-and-1 pretty early, but they didn’t shoot a bunch of free throws after they got into the 1-and-1.
“Kyle (Mangas) had kind of a tough night, but kind of broke loose there at the end. It’s a good win for us because we had to grit one out.”
Mangas, Warsaw’s standout guard and Indiana All-Star hopeful, was 5 of 13 from the field but made 8 of 10 free throw attempts en route to a game high 19 points. He also pulled down five rebounds and made two steals.
Senior Jaceb Burish scored seven points in the win, while senior Jeremy David and juniors Ross Johnson and Zach Riley tallied four points each, and senior Braxton Minix rounded out Warsaw’s offense with a pair of free throws.
Senior Hunter Hollowell made 5 of 8 three-point attempts and led Huntington North with 15 points, while junior Mitchell Geller scored nine points and seniors Luke Pulver and Chazz Bruce chipped in with five each.
Warsaw is in action again this week with two home games, as the Tigers host Manchester Thursday and Lake Central Friday.
“It’s kind of odd to have a Thursday night and Friday night situation,” said Ogle. “Last year we were at Manchester, then made the long drive to Lake Central. We’re so thankful we don’t have to make two road trips. We’re looking forward to being back in the Tiger Den.”
