The Lady Warriors trimmed that lead down to three, 18-15, before Whitko kicked its offense back into gear and took a 64-36 home win in Three Rivers Conference girls basketball action.
North Miami went on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to three, but the Lady Wildcats finished the half on a 12-2 run of their own to re-establish their lead. Whitko then held the visitors to four points again in the third quarter, forcing the Lady Warriors into turnovers and converting them in to points in transition.
Whitko head coach Brandon Bradley felt like his team got away from what it wants to do during the North Miami rally, and found a way to play with more energy to build a big lead.
“We were a lot better after halftime,” he said. “I don’t want to discredit (North Miami); they’ve got some good young kids and they’re going to be really good in the next couple of years. But I do think we shot ourselves in the foot in the first half.
“We gave up open jumpers at times in the second quarter, and they banked a couple of them in. But we didn’t play with a lot of energy in the first half. In the locker room we talked about needing to find some energy somewhere, and we still didn’t have that aggression, that energy we wanted.
“But we got that off our bench tonight from Haley Yohe, Brielle Harrison and Emalee Duggins. They were great off the bench, and we played well after that.”
The trio Bradley credited scored a combined 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. In the third quarter, each player tied the ball up at least once, and their teammates responded with hearty applause.
Senior Aly Reiff also took the reins of the offense in the third quarter, exploding for 15 of her game-high 31 points in the period. Twice she went coast-to-coast with a rebound for a layup, and twice she stole a pass and scored. She also hit a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter when Whitko was restoring order.
“Aly did it by turning defense into offense,” Bradley said. “She did a really nice job of turning up her energy in the third quarter, and made a difference in the game.”
Hanna Yohe had seven points for Whitko, with Brianna Cumberland, Ellie Snep, Harrison and Duggins scoring five points each. Adria Hartley came off the bench to lead North Miami with 11 points.
Whitko (9-0 overall, 2-0 TRC) will have most of the week off before facing a couple of road tests. The Lady Wildcats play at TRC foe Manchester Friday night, then travel to 4A No. 9 Penn on Saturday.
