NORTH MANCHESTER – As the old saying goes, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
Wawasee High School’s varsity boys basketball team started horribly, and never led in the game until it counted most, giving Manchester heartbreak in the process.
Warrior junior Jacob Hand hit a shot in the lane as time expired, pushing his team past the host Squires 41-40 Friday night. It was Wawasee’s only lead of the game, and Hand’s only shot of the night.
Coming out of a timeout with 13 seconds left, Hand took the ball in the backcourt, dribbled to the free throw line, spun, and almost lost the ball. He regained control just in time to get off a shot in the paint, and the ball bounced once before falling through.
Hand was then chased down the floor by his celebrating teammates.
“Coach told us we were going 4-0, which is four people at the bottom, and an iso for me,” Hand said. “I had the option to shoot it or pass it, and I got the shot off. Fortunately, it went in.”
The start of the game couldn’t have been much worse for the Warriors. They  turned the ball over on seven of their first eight possessions and fell behind 8-0 early and 12-4 by the end of the first quarter.
Mason Hamby scored eight points for Manchester in the first eight minutes, and finished with 13 in the game.
Wawasee stuck with its game plan, which was to be patient on offense. It used a 13-3 run of its own to draw within one at intermission, but the Squires reinflated the lead in the third quarter. Wawasee continued to chip away until the final play, and head coach Jon Everingham was glad the effort paid real, tangible dividends.
“I was really proud of our guys for sticking with it. We came out a little flat and had a deficit early on, and we had trouble getting back in the game. In the third quarter we wanted to control the ball, but (Manchester) did a good job. Credit their coach (Mark Underwood), they matched our patience. We never really could get them under control.
“It showed we have the ability to stick with it, no matter what the score is. That’s what we did tonight.
“Jacob is obviously going to get a lot of recognition for that shot, but he did a great job defensively. They have some weapons to score, and we held them to 40 points. I’m really proud of how our guys grinded it out tonight.”
On the other side of the gym, Underwood said this loss was especially tough to take.
“It’s a devastating situation when you lead the whole game and lose it like that,” He said. “I’ve coached for 25 years and hundreds of games, and that’s never happened before. It’s just one of those things. The guy who hits the shot, it’s his first field goal of the game, and it was a tough shot. It wasn’t like we left him wide open or anything like that.
“Even though it’s really disappointing right now, we’re going to have to stay together as a team and we’re going to have to overcome this setback. We did a lot of good things in the game, and we made some nice moves offensively. A lot of people would look at the score and say ‘well, you only scored 40,’ but with their slow-down tempo they used, there just aren’t as many possessions in a game, and there aren’t going to be as many points.”
Koehl Fluke tied Hamby for team-high scoring honors with 13 points for Manchester, with Adam Byers adding eight. The Squires (0-3) travel to Warsaw on Thursday.
Trevon Coleman had a game-high 14 points for Wawasee, with Tyler Smith adding 11 and Bennett Hoffert hitting a pair of treys for six points.
Wawasee matched its win total from last season, and takes a 2-1 record into its home game with West Noble tonight.
