No. 5 Warsaw Tigers Fall To Homestead Spartans

December 3, 2016 at 7:39 a.m.

FORT WAYNE – Their shots didn’t fall Friday night, and as a result the Class 4A No. 5 Warsaw Tigers did.
Playing away from the Tiger Den for the first time this season, Warsaw’s varsity boys basketball team faced its toughest opponent to date.
The Homestead Spartans played solid defense and shot just well enough themselves to upset the Tigers 50-37.
Homestead, which improved to 2-0 on the season and 5-1 in the all-time series against Warsaw, was 14 of 37 (38 percent) from the field overall, 5 of 19 from three-point range, and 17 of 22 at the charity stripe.
The Tigers, who fell to 2-1 after losing for just the second time in their last 25 regular-season games, were 12 of 40 (30 percent) from the field overall, 2 of 13 from the arc, and 11 of 12 at the free throw line.
Homestead’s defense was centered around containing 6-foot-3 Indiana All-Star hopeful Kyle Mangas, who entered the game averaging 28 points per contest.
Mangas, who made 24 of 31 shot attempts in Warsaw’s first two games, was just 5 of 18 Friday, though he did make 7 of 8 free throw attempts and scored a game-high 18 points.
“For Kyle to shoot like that, it’s going to make it tough for us in any situation,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle. “I felt OK at halftime because we hadn’t played very well and we were up by three points.
“So, I thought we could play better, but Kyle not shooting well (hurt us), and we had the combination of too much fouling and we had some defensive breakdowns.”
The Tigers trailed 13-11 after one quarter of play and took their first lead when junior Asher Blum scored to make it 20-18.
Warsaw led 24-21 at halftime, but was outscored 29-13 in the third and fourth quarters.
The Tigers were 4 of 4 at the charity stripe in the second half, but never found their shooting touch from the floor, as they were just 4 of 20 overall and 1 of 9 from the arc in the final 16 minutes of play.
Despite its shooting woes, Warsaw was still in the game, and Mangas cut his team’s deficit to five points, 42-37, with a pair of free throws with 2:00 remaining.
Those were the last points the Tigers scored, however, as Mangas fouled out with a minute remaining and the Spartans closed the game on an 8-0 run.
“They shot a bunch of free throws in the second half, so we fouled them too much,” Ogle said of the Spartans, who were 15 of 20 at the free throw line in the third and fourth quarters.
“They got inside on us. We didn’t execute very well. We didn’t pass the ball very well. We didn’t do anything well. But, I would say Homestead’s defense was pretty good. They didn’t give us anything easy. They stayed in front of us pretty well. They guarded Mangas pretty well. We knew they were a lot better defensively than the two teams we’d played already.”
Along with Mangas’ 18 points, the Tigers got six points out of senior Jeremy David, five from junior Jack Rhoades and four from Blum.
Senior Braxton Minix and junior Ross Johnson scored two points each.
For Homestead, Brandon Durnell scored 14 points, while Jack Ferguson and Sam Buck chipped in with 11 and 10, respectively.
The Tigers are right back in action tonight with a trip to Huntington North, a team that fell 48-44 to Homestead in the season opener but has won its last two games against Mississinewa and Southwood.
