Tigers Fall Short In Offensive Showcase

Warsaw football coach Phil Jensen isn’t into moral victories.
Neither is his son, senior quarterback Michael Jensen.
Both were smiling Friday night, however, despite being on the short end of a 47-42 shootout with the visiting East Noble Knights.
In the first varsity contest played on the new synthetic turf at Fisher Field, the Tigers trailed by 20 points twice.
They rallied and made things extremely interesting, though, in a game that would make fantasy football owners jump for joy.
All the Tigers and Knights did was combine for 50 first downs, 89 points and 905 yards of total offense.
East Noble junior quarterback Andrew McCormick completed 31 of 42 passes for 452 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran for 89 yards, including a 30-yard scoring scamper.
East Noble senior wideout Dylan Hunley made 14 receptions for 326 yards and four scores.
Michael Jensen completed 20 of 35 attempts for 229 yards and two touchdowns, connecting on scores with senior twins D’Andre and Devin Street.
D’Andre Street led the Tigers with 10 catches for 147 yards.
“Last week, our defense carried us the entire time .... this week, we knew the offense had to step up,” said Michael Jensen. “Offensively, we stepped up in the second half. I know I wouldn’t wanna play defense on McCormick or Hunley, they’re great football players. I can’t blame the defense for what they did.
“As for us playing with guts ... we just knew we had to dig down deep. This was senior night, opening night with the new field, and we knew we had to do something special.”
After trailing 27-7 and 34-14, the Tigers cut East Noble’s advantage to 34-28 and then 40-35.
The Knights took a 47-35 advantage on McCormick’s sixth touchdown pass of the night, a 2-yarder to Cade Erwin with 1:45 remaining in the game.
Warsaw cut the deficit to five points again with 25 seconds left when senior Mason Faas barreled his way in from a yard.
The Tigers attempted an onside kick, but were unable to recover it.
Despite the loss, Phil Jensen was upbeat following the game. He praised his players for the way they fought back, and talked about how excited he is to move forward, starting with next week’s conference opener at longtime rival Plymouth.
“What a great group of kids .... they didn’t give up, they didn’t quit,” said Phil Jensen. “I mean, you’re all thinking you’re gonna write about a blowout at halftime, and rightfully so, but I’m just really proud of them.
“What you saw was kids playing hard and getting after it in every phase of the game. The defense kept playing. The offense kept playing. Special teams kept playing. The coaches kept coaching.
“That’s what it’s supposed to be like. Do I hate losing? Yes. But what we saw, and what we learned tonight, man, I’m just so proud of them.”
East Noble finished the game with 547 yards and 27 first downs.
The Tigers tallied 23 first downs and 358 total yards of offense.
Warsaw, now 1-1 on the season, will open NLC play at Plymouth Friday.
East Noble, which rebounded from a 48-0 loss in the season opener to Class 6A No. 5 Cathedral, takes a 1-1 record into next week’s game at Huntington North.
“We didn’t get going in the first half like we need to, but now we get ready to go play the conference schedule,” said Phil Jensen. “We gotta go to Plymouth ... what a place to start. I don’t wanna speak for Coach (Luke) Amstutz, but this is why East Noble and Warsaw schedule each other. We’re gonna get each other ready for the conference.”
