Sports Wrap: Whitko Completes Huge Comeback

SOUTH WHITLEY – After dropping the first two games of its match with visiting Columbia City, Whitko came back to beat the Lady Eagles 26-28, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-11 Tuesday night.
Haley Yohe had 45 assists in the marathon match. Kaity Reed had four aces, 18 digs and 21 kills. Brianna Tackett added four blocks.
Whitko (2-0) travels to Manchester on Thursday.

LADY SPARTANS PICKED FIFTH
NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester University’s women’s tennis team landed in the top five of the 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s preseason coaches’ poll, released Tuesday.
The Spartans, sporting a run of six consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament berths, received 45 points for a fifth-place selection. Three-time defending champion Hanover College was named the preseason favorite, accumulating 79 points and seven first-place votes, while Rose-Hulman (66 points – two first-place votes) and Franklin College (65 points) were neck-and-neck for second and third.
MU had three student-athletes noted on the Players to Watch section. They were juniors Erin Cordill, North Manchester’s Katie Peden and Leesburg’s Katy Ashpole.
MU starts its 2016-17 campaign traveling to Franklin College Sept. 3, for a non-conference dual.

LAKELAND CHRISTIAN VB FALLS
WINONA LAKE – Lakeland Christian Academy had 11 digs from Heather Plastow and nine digs, two kills and an ace from Cami Dahms in a 25-11, 25-15, 25-12 loss to Bethany Christian Tuesday.
The Lady Cougar junior varsity dropped a pair of games to the Lady Bruins 25-12, 25-6.
LCA will host the Southside Michiana Crusaders on Saturday.

WAWASEE FALLS TO CENTRAL NOBLE
SYRACUSE – While the set scores were close, Wawasee’s girls volleyball team lost in three sets, 25-17, 26-24, 25-21 to visiting Central Noble in the Hardwood Tepee Tuesday.
Madie Wilson had 24 digs, Seaquinn Bright had 13 digs and Olivia Clouse had 5 kills for the Lady Warriors.
The Wawasee junior varsity won in two sets by identical 25-19 scores. Caitlin Wortinger and Elizabeth Kleopfer had eight digs each, and Faith Swihart and Janae Hapner had three kills each.
The Lady Warriors (1-3) travel to Goshen to take on Bethany Christian on Thursday.

Two More Aces At Raccoon Run
Two more holes-in-one shots were recorded at Raccoon Run Golf Course in the last week. Izzy Ray, a member of the Warsaw Tigers girls golf team, aced the 16th hole with her hybrid club. Witnesses were teammates Delaney Wihebrink, Madelyn Ray and Madi Graham.
Brad Cleveland holed his tee shot on No. 15 with an 8-iron. His shot was witnessed by Jeff Ruffner.
The two shots brings the number of aces at Raccoon Run to six over the last 60 days.

Manchester Booster Golf Outing Scheduled
NORTH MANCHESTER – The 16th annual Manchester High School Athletic Booster Club’s golf outing will be held Sept. 11 at Sycamore Golf Club, with lunch at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The tournament will have a 4-person Florida Scramble format.
The cost is $50 per player, and $35 for Sycamore members. There will be cash prizes for the first three places, plus proxy prizes.

Directions to Valley Game At Western High School
AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley Athletic Director Duane Burkhart said the best way for Viking fans to get to Friday’s game at Western is to go south on US 31, then turn right (heading west) on Southway Boulevard in Kokomo (Ruby Tuesday's is on the corner). Western is about 6 1/2 miles from 31 on the left. The field is behind the high school.
