Lady Tigers Win XC Invite; Warsaw Boys 2nd

Both the Warsaw boys and girls cross country teams had an impressive duo near the front of the field in Tuesday’s Warsaw Invitational.
The difference between the two home teams in their respective 5K race was the Lady Tigers’ overall depth.
Led by individual champion Mia Beckham (19:11) and runner-up Allison Miller (19:24), the Lady Tigers had all five of their scoring runners cross the line in the top 15 of the 157-person event.
That performance led to a team score of 28 points and a convincing championship.
On the boys side, Warsaw’s Zeb Hernandez and Lucas Howett finished second and third, respectively, but the Tigers only had one other runner finish in the top 25 of the 192-person race.
Subsequently, the Tigers finished second as a team, nine points behind the Homestead Spartans, who had their five scoring runners finish in the top 18.
Following Beckham and Miller in the Lady Tigers’ scoring lineup, Anna Craig finished fourth (19:40), while Charlene Orr was eighth (19:56) and Emma Bohnenkamper was 15th (20:41).
“I think you’ll see that all season,” Warsaw girls coach Matt Campbell said of his duo up front. “I think Anna Craig is gonna be up there as well ... she had a little bit of a slower start, but I think it’ll be a 1-2-3 punch. And our 4-7, we have the Orrs, and we have Emma Bohnenkamper, and we have a freshman, Taylor Gunter, and Angie Sanchez is in that mix, and Megan Metzger.
“We have a few girls that are hurting right now and didn’t run. It’ll be fun to figure out who the final seven are when the time comes.”
Columbia City finished a distant second in the girls team standings with 68 points, followed by Rochester (99), Manchester (116), Bishop Luers (135), NorthWood (136), Northfield (184), Bethany Christian (201), Fairfield (210) and Tippecanoe Valley (324).
Manchester’s Rae Bedke finished third in a time of 19:35, while teammates Jaelyn Webb (21:26) and Tahnee Fuentes (21:49) were 21st and 24th, respectively.
Haley Hoover led the Valley girls with a time of 26:02, finishing 108th.
Whitko had three girls compete, led by Hanna Yohe’s 66th-place time 24:07.
In the boys team standings, Rochester finished third with 96 points. The Zebras were led by Thomas Rohr’s first-place time of 16:11.
Columbia City finished fourth with 128 points, followed by Bishop Luers (158), NorthWood (162), Winamac (174), Fairfield (185), Manchester (194), Blackhawk Christian (216) and Tippecanoe Valley (336).
Warsaw boys coach Jim Mills was happy about Hernandez and Howett finishing in the top three, but was disappointed that Xavi Ramirez, who finished ninth in 17:01, was the only other Tiger in the top 25.
“We know we’re a work in progress, believe me, we knew that before the season started,” said Mills. “We’ve got three quality guys, and we’ve got guys who didn’t put in a lot of work until the middle of the summer.
“I think we’ll be pretty good by the time it counts, but right now we’re just OK. With three guys you can’t get very far. For us, it’s ‘who’s gonna step up in the next month?’ If we have four quality runners, and a few guys who fill in the gaps, we’ll be pretty darn good.”
Rounding out Warsaw’s lineup of scoring runners were 27th-place finisher Taylor Mills (18:11) and 31st-place finisher Nathaniel Gottschalk (18:34).
Drew Jones led Manchester’s boys team with a 37th-place time of 18:45.
Whitko had just three competitors in the boys race, led by 45th-place finisher Logan Busz (19:09).
Lakeland Christian had four competitors, led by 142nd-place finisher Trenton Parker (22:52).
Tippecanoe Valley was led by Justin Peconga, who finished 116th in a time of 21:20.
