Triton Spikers Fall To Rochester

BOURBON – While competitive at different points in the match, Triton’s girls volleyball team couldn’t maintain Rochester’s consistent level of play in falling 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 in volleyball action at the Trojan Trench Monday evening.
The opening set saw each team go on short runs; Triton got one or two points at a time, while the Lady Zebras had a pair of three-point runs to pull away late. In the second set, Rochester rattled off seven straight points early, and the Lady Trojans got no closer than five.
With the third set tied at four, Rochester went on a 17-7 run to take a 21-11 lead and take away any real hope of a Triton comeback.
Statistically, Triton was led by Nichole Sechrist’s seven kills, Hannah Wanemacher’s 12 assists and Quinn Downing’s eight digs.
Triton head coach Gayle Perry noted that Rochester’s front line, particularly senior Hannah Towne and junior Maddy Sailors, were especially effective against her team.
“They’re a really good team. They play fast, and they make you pay for short serves. We freeballed way too much; our first pass was way off the net, and our setters were scrambling” Perry said. “Then someone has to bump it over, and that’s not what you do at the varsity level. You’ve got to get a back-row attack or a down-spike or something. You just can’t freeball. You might get away with it for a game or two, if you had to, but that’s not how we want to play.
“But Rochester forced the issue. That No. 13 (Towne) is awesome. Their setters did a nice job, too. Obviously, they’re a year-round club team and I got this job about five days before we started. So we’re short of practice time, but we’re doing the best we can right now. We’re learning through matches, and I thought we rallied with them for a while; in each game there were spots where we were competitive. But we had no answer for No. 13 across the front. She just owned us.”
Alas, not all hope is lost, Perry said.
“Hopefully, we learned. It’s good to play a good team like that so we get to see what it’s supposed to look like. And we hope that by the end of the season we can climb that ladder and get a little bit closer to where they’re at. That’s what we’re aiming for.”
The Lady Trojan junior varsity also lost, 25-4 and 25-13, to Rochester.
Now 2-1 on the season, Triton is right back at it today, hosting Bremen at 5 p.m.
