Second-Half Surge Lifts Tigers

COLUMBIA CITY – Warsaw football coach Phil Jensen challenged his players at halftime of Friday’s season opener at Columbia City.
The Tigers responded in a big way, scoring in all three phases and putting 30 points on the board in just over 14 minutes of action en route to a 30-7 win at Max Gandy Athletic Field.
After a pair of turnovers and a two missed field goals in the first half, the?Tigers trailed 7-0 at the intermission.
Warsaw wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard after the break, however, as speedy senior D’Andre Street ran the kickoff back 85 yards for a touchdown.
Senior Mason Faas, Warsaw’s 215-pound middle linebacker, gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead on a 5-yard plunge, coming out of the backfield as part of a “jumbo set.”
A short time later, Faas blocked a Columbia City punt and ran it into the endzone.
The Warsaw defense scored a safety with 10:53 remaining in the game, and then senior quarterback Michael Jensen raced in from 17 yards out to cap the scoring with 9:53 left.
“We talked at halftime that we had faced adversity, how we have to play like we’re coached, and executing instead of trying to do what we don’t do,” said Phil Jensen, now just seven wins shy of his 100th career win with the Tigers. “We talked about all those things that went wrong in the first half, but I told them if we respond this could be the best first half of football we could have asked for.”
The Eagles scored their touchdown just four minutes into the game on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by senior Brock Snouffer.
Columbia City did very little offensively outside of that, as the Eagles tallied just 139 yards of total offense.
The Eagles, who were forced to punt 10 times, racked up just 47 yards on 33 carries, and were 9 of 18 through the air for 92 yards.
Columbia City turned the ball over twice – an interception by Warsaw senior Collin Marshall and on a fumble.
Warsaw senior lineman AJ Villareal, a move-in from Wawasee, had two sacks in his debut with the Tigers.
Senior Jeremy David, playing both tight end and linebacker for Warsaw, led the Tigers with seven solo tackles, and also caught one pass from 18 yards.
“Our defense played really, really well ... even in the first half,” said Phil Jensen. “The only thing that I got on the defense about a little bit was that mental let down. Our offense is pounding them and pounding them with the run, and all of a sudden we have a big run and we fumble it. Our defense is right back on the field, and I think we kind of got our on heels the rest of that series and they scored the touchdown.
“We’ve got to be tough all the time. We’ve got to be mentally tough all the time, not just when things are going well, and that was an example. But, they sure came back in the second half and just kept feeding off each other.”
Junior Will McGarvey led Warsaw’s offense with 19 carries for 144 yards, an average of nearly eight yards per attempt.
His longest run of the night was for 44 yards, but he fumbled the ball at the 1-yard line and it rolled out the back of the endzone.
The touchback gave Columbia City the ball at the 20, and the Eagles marched 80 yards for their only score of the game.
Warsaw senior Rob Sullivan rushed for 36 yards on nine carries, while sophomore Trenton Sands tallied 25 yards on eight carries in the fourth quarter.
Junior Trevor York led Warsaw’s receiving corps with two catches for 35 yards.
Michael Jensen completed 5 of 14 passes for 61 yards.
For Columbia City, Snouffer rushed for 29 yards on 19 carries and completed 8 of 17 pass attempts for 62 yards.
Jacob Winget tallied 13 yards on four carries, while Khale Rider had five carries for five yards.
The Eagles’ longest play from scrimmage was a 30-yard halfback pass from Dyson Redden to Rider.
Warsaw hosts East Noble Friday in the Tigers’ first game on their new turf field, while Columbia City travels to Whitley County rival Whitko.
