Warsaw Netters Beat Huntington North

It didn’t take long for Warsaw boys tennis coach Rick Orban to see the determination of his players – particularly senior Andrew Gauger.
In their season opener, the Tigers hosted Huntington North and defeated the Vikings 4-1 Wednesday.
Warsaw, which won both doubles matches and at No. 2 and 3 singles, was victorious after a one-hour rain delay and Gauger’s thrilling three-set win.
“I’m just thrilled about it,” Orban said of his team’s win. “I believe last year when we played them it was 3-2, and it could have been that tonight.
“I’m thrilled with the toughness that the kids showed this early in the season. This was our first match ... Huntington played Peru (Tuesday) night and won 3-2. I’m thrilled with the way we played and the toughness we showed.”
With the team outcome already decided, Gauger put on a show at No. 2 singles en route to a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win.
Huntington North’s Auden Eckert led 5-2 in the third set, but couldn’t put the determined Gauger away.
“Andrew Gauger at No. 2 singles tonight, to be down 5-2 in the third set and come back ... the mental toughness he showed is incredible,” said Orban. “He showed that last year. This is a huge confidence builder for him for the rest of the year.”
In the No. 3 singles match, Warsaw senior David Homme defeated Adam Zahm 6-0, 6-0.
“David Homme, at No. 3 singles, just played incredible,” said Orban. “Our No. 1 doubles team finally decided they were gonna get to the net, and take away the net from their opponents. That’s huge for us.
“Our No. 2 doubles, they did a great job tonight. I’m just really thrilled with the way we played. I saw intensity that I hadn’t seen in the last week. I’m real pleased with that.”
Warsaw seniors Justin Stout and Ryan Wettschurack were 6-2, 6-3 winners at No. 1 doubles over Matt Karst and Clark Kitchen.
At No. 2 doubles, Warsaw’s duo of senior Hayden Steger and sophomore Spencer Britton beat Dane Eherenman and Brent Kreiger 6-3, 6-4.
Huntington North’s lone win came at No. 1 singles, as Nick May defeated Warsaw junior Colton Lind 6-1, 6-1.
“I’m thrilled even with the way our No. 1 singles player, Colton Lind, played,” said Orban. “He’s just got to get used to the fact that he’s got to keep going for his shots.”
In JV action, the Tigers were 7-3 winners over Huntington North.
Warsaw is in action again today at Penn.
