WINONA?LAKE – Winona Lake Town Council Tuesday approved a bid to create sidewalks on Mission Drive and Pierceton Road as part of the new Greenway path.
Craig Allebach, town coordinator, said the sidewalk will extend along the new Heritage Trail north from Beta Hall back along the crosswalk on Pierceton Road.
The council approved a $169,977 contract with Phend & Brown for the sidewalk. Robert Swanson, councilman, made the motion to accept the bid, seconded by Councilman Denny Duncan.
In other business, the council also approved a $75,382 bid with Phend & Brown for reconstruction of Sandra Lane.
“There have been problems with water collecting and the street deteriorating,” Larry Long, town engineer, said.
He said 250 feet of pavement will be replaced, and new curbs and gutters will be installed.
Rick Swaim, councilman, said he has lived by Sandra Lane for the past 20 years and is glad to see the problem being fixed.
Long provided an update on the Muirfield Subdivision street reconstruction project. He said the project is 75 percent complete, and the storm drains and curb and gutters have been installed. The road will be paved Thursday.
Also during the meeting, the council approved submitting its proposed 2017 budget to Gateway. The budget shows an increase of 3 percent over the 2016 budget.
The council approved an ordinance for building codes and a resolution to reduce the 2016 general fund by $43,800 so that money will not be spent this year.
Tom Miller, street superintendent, said the public works building has been painted and smoke testing was done on Wooster Road.
Winona Happenings include a Cardinal Services 5K in Winona Lake Park at 9 a.m. Aug 27; Lake Area Community Band Concert at Artisan Court Gazebo in the Village from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27; Chamber Music Festival at Artisan Court from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 3; Canal Days in Village At Winona Sept. 3; and Block Of Love in the Village is from 2 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10.
