Claypool Man Charged In Beating Of Employee

Calvin Eugene Klumpp, 44, of 9020 S. Smalley Lane, Claypool, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail Monday on charges of battery while armed with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony; battery with moderate bodily injury, a level 6 felony; and criminal mischief, a class B misdemeanor. He is being held on an $10,250 bond.
According to the probable cause affidavit from the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office, on July 21 a law enforcement officer spoke with a victim of a battery incident. The victim advised he was living in a camper on Klumpp’s property.
On July 20, the victim was walking to his camper when Klumpp approached him and asked if he was stealing his clients. Klumpp then allegedly began hitting the victim with a closed fist about eight to nine times, causing a cut to the victim’s face and swelling to his right eye. Klumpp told him to leave the property.
The victim told police he left and then returned to get his dog and clothing. Klumpp allegedly came at him with a steel pipe and began hitting him six to seven times in the head, left side of the face, left ribs, left hip and across the chest with the pipe. The responding officer observed swelling and redness in the areas where the victim reported he was struck and photographed the injuries. The victim further advised Klumpp used the steel pipe to break the front headlight, light and mirror on his truck.
The responding officer spoke with Klumpp’s girlfriend who advised she observed the victim approaching his camper and Klumpp confronting him about working for someone else behind his back. She stated Klumpp then began hitting the victim and the victim left the premises. She advised the victim returned and Klumpp ran him off. The officer observed a metal tire jack sitting on the table next to the front door.
The officer spoke with Klumpp, who allegedly admitted he gave the victim “four good ones” and told him to leave. He also admitted that he used a walking stick to push against the victim’s chest with his elbows and pushed his elbow into the victim’s neck.
The officer retrieved medical records from Parkview Hospital where the victim was treated. The victim’s injuries were diagnosed as blunt head injury, neck pain, abdominal pain, chest pain and left hip pain.
