SYRACUSE – It’s still early enough in the girls golf season that improvement is a constant goal. At South Shore Golf Club on Wednesday, that theme rang true among all three teams competing.
Wawasee claimed wins over Whitko and West Noble in a three-way, nine-hole match, with the Lady Warriors posting a 205 to the Lady Wildcats’ 235 and the Lady Chargers’ 241.
Senior Aubrey Schmeltz was the medalist, as the Wawasee senior’s 44 was five shots better than her nearest competitor, classmate Madison Beaman. Freshman Jadison Rostochak had a 52, Valerie Hessig had a 60 and Kabrea Rostochak shot a 67 for the Lady Warriors.
“We’re getting better,” Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone said. “We’re emphasizing the short game, and the girls are trying to work hard on it, and we’re getting better. We’ll see where we go from here.”
Whitko coach Mike Hanback said he wanted his team to pay particular attention to the course, since the Lady Wildcats will be back at South Shore Saturday for the Wawasee Invitational.
The preview rendered three season-best scores for the Lady Wildcats. For the second night in a row, Claire Reiff shot a 53. Holly Hathaway shot a 57, Bailey Wright a 62, Makayla Compton and Alexys Rider both scoring 63s.
“Bailey, Makayla and Alexys each had their lowest scores of the young season,” Hanback said. “It was really hot, and I was happy with how they worked through the heat,” he said.
“We talked about paying attention out there and making the nine holes we played tonight an advantage for us on Saturday.”
Barring significant rain between now and Saturday morning, the course figures to lend itself toward a pitch-and-roll strategy for the Wawasee Invitational.
“This course can be challenging, no doubt about it,” said Coverstone. “Right now the greens are pretty firm and pretty fast. We’re going to have to focus on playing (the ball) short and letting it bounce on.”
Wawasee improved to 3-2 in dual matches this season, and Whitko moved to 1-4.
