NORTH WEBSTER – The North Webster Community Center announced a new twist for area walkers: The upcoming “Destination Indy Winter Walking Competition,” set to take place Feb. 1 to March 29.
Participants will be challenged to tally the same walking miles that they would if they had in fact walked from the NWCC to Indianapolis (142 miles) or to South Bend (37 miles) with a chance to win Family Express gift cards valued at as much as $100.
Other prizes will also be drawn from the names of those who complete the mileage as part of the free program, which doesn’t require registration. Winter walkers can pick up a map to record their distance and fill out a 2025 waiver in the Community Center office Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays with expanded hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with open gym until May 1.
For the rest of the winter until March 31, NWCC walkers may exclusively access the Center from noon to 3 p.m. Sundays.
“We’re trying to provide walkers with an enhanced chance to exercise sheltered from the winter weather through access to the North Webster Community Center hallways, already a popular walking venue for area residents focused on year-round exercise,” said NWCC Executive Director Emily Shipley.
The NWCC, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 tax-exempt corporation, was established in 2002 to restore and preserve the former North Webster elementary school as a unique asset in the lake-area resort community in which it’s located, said Shipley, adding that the NWCC’s board initially raised $1.4 million to renovate the building, which is currently being utilized by the entire surrounding community.
Today, it’s home to a number of local groups and businesses such as the Kosciusko Community YMCA, Senior Primelife Enrichment Center (SPEC), The Watershed Foundation Inc. and NWCC Massage Therapy. In addition, the Center is available as a rental facility for a wide variety of events from weddings to fundraisers to Mermaid Festival pageants, election polls, health screenings, class reunions, birthday parties and countless Scout, lake association, town council, service club and support group meetings.
Contact Shipley in person at the NWCC at 301 N. Main St., North Webster, by email at [email protected] or by phone at 574-834-1600, ext. 221.
