PIERCETON — Pierceton Town Council approved a bid from Phend & Brown for street paving work during a meeting Monday.
The town received a total of three bids, with Phend & Brown presenting the lowest amount at $111,676. Pierceton will pay for the work through monies received from the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program.
Council also received one bid for the sale of a Ford Fusion owned by the Pierceton Police Department. However, this bid was rejected as it did not meet the minimum amount council wanted for it. The council approved re-bidding the Fusion for sale.
Town Marshal Jim Bumbaugh told the council Alex Morrison, who was sworn in as a deputy marshal in January, had resigned effective immediately. He asked for council's permission to have Shawn Castillo changed from reserve deputy to part-time paid deputy. Council approved Bumbaugh's request.
In other business, the council approved giving Town Superintendent Casey Boggs and Clerk-Treasurer Myra Mast authority to approve small projects within town that are not invasive in nature. Large-scale projects would still require council authorization.
"One of the examples that I gave was digging conduit that's underground, running new lines through, no excavation," said Boggs. "Another thing would be extending service a block away or something like that ... it's not too invasive, it speeds the process up. This is just the simple stuff for us to make judgment calls and we'll keep you in the loop."
The council also approved a proposal from Fleis & VandenBrink to do some design work for Pierceton connecting to the Kosciusko County master trails system in the future.
Council also:
• Tabled a request from a resident seeking to place a pollination garden and koi pond on his property.
• Heard the Pierceton Days Committee is continuing to look for members. Notifications about upcoming meetings will be sent via REACH Alert.
Pierceton Council's next regular meeting is at 6:30 p.m. March 10.
