LEESBURG  — Leesburg Town Council voted to purchase an air purification system as a solution to the ongoing sewer odor coming from the main pumping station.
The decision was made during the council meeting Monday.
Leesburg Council President Tom Moore spoke with Dan Fox, general manager of Astbury Water Technology Inc., about the continuing issue the town has with the offensive odor.
Moore said he discovered this is a very common problem with grinder pump systems, with the odor being worse during the winter months when households are using less water.
The cost of the system, which comes assembled, is $26,819.96.
Moore said the estimated delivery time for the system is 12-14 weeks.
Kosciusko County Community Coordinator Amy Roe and Michiana Area Council Of Governments (MACOG) Director of Operations Zach Dripps attended Monday night’s meeting to discuss potential grant opportunities the town could apply for in order to obtain funding for future sidewalk replacement/improvement projects.
Before discussing grant opportunities, Roe complimented the council, saying, “First of all, you all take care of business around here. It is really refreshing to hear how you just rattle off these things and you just make it happen. You have a checklist and you keep track of everything. You work hard to keep on top of it, so I think that should be commended first. You’re very proactive and that’s good work.”
One grant opportunity Dripps suggested checking into is the Department of Natural Resources Indiana Trails Program.
“There are options. It’s just figuring out the best options,” Roe said. “They may not be traditional funds. We might have to be a little creative.”
In other news:
• A law requiring that government meetings in Indiana be live-streamed or recorded for the purpose of increasing transparency takes effect July 1. Council discussed when to begin recording their meetings, with Councilman Mitch Rader suggesting the council begin recording their meetings in April.
• Council will be holding an executive meeting to discuss contracts and other issues at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17.
• Derek Tenney of Tenney & Sons provided a sanitary sewer report.
The next regular meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. March 10.
