BOURBON — A South Bend man was recently arrested for allegedly dealing drugs in Marshall County to a woman who overdosed and died in April 2019.
Matthew Edward Campbell, 43, South Bend, is charged with dealing in a controlled substance resulting in death, a level 1 felony; and possession of methamphetamine and possession of a narcotic drug, both level 6 felonies.
On April 9, 2019, a Bourbon Police officer responded to a report of an unresponsive woman at a residence. The woman, identified as Detrice "Dee" Schrimsher, 38, was unresponsive with no pulse and was not breathing upon the officer's arrival. Campbell was also at the home at the time.
According to court documents, Campbell said Schrimsher had texted him about hanging out and asked him to bring her some "stuff." Campbell told police that "stuff" was meth or heroin.
Campbell said when he arrived, he used meth and heroin, placing two bags of meth and heroin in Schrimsher's room. He told police Schrimsher became unresponsive, leading him to attempt CPR and dial 911.
Schrimsher was taken to a hospital in South Bend, where she later died on April 14, 2019.
Upon searching Schrimsher's phone, officers found text messages showing a history of Campbell supplying Schrimsher with illegal drugs.
Campbell was booked in the Marshall County Jail on April 6, 2025.
