SILVER LAKE – At Wednesday night's meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council reminded the public of several Halloween events in town this month, including trick-or-treating, a Trunk-or-Treat event and a costume contest with the fire department.
From 6 to 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 19. there will be chili and cookies from the fire department and a costume contest. There will be first and second prizes awarded in three age groups — 0 to 12, 13 to 19, 20 and up — plus a prize each for youngest and oldest in costume.
Trick-or-treating and Trunk-or-Treat at Our Hometown Station, 201 S. Jefferson St., will be Oct. 31 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; the town and Lions Club are participating with goody bags at the Trunk-or-Treat.
Ahead of the regular meeting Wednesday, there was a budget public hearing with a presentation from Tyler Coffel of Baker Tilly.
Coffel said the town's net assessed value has gone up $6 million from $29 to $35 million, so tax rates will go down. Overall, 23% of tax income goes to public safety, 44% to town operations and the remainder across several smaller funds like local road and street.
In other business, the council:
• Heard Youth Pastor Scott Herring introduce a new church in Silver Lake, located at 979 Ind. 14.
• Approved a new rifle and ammunition for the police department.
• Approved a claims docket of $190,698.48.
• Heard a resident's concern about a property on Neher Road whose easement and pier ownership is in question.
The 2025 budget adoption meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 29.
Council's next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 13.
