Kosciusko Merit Board Hears Updates On JCAP, KCRP
November 14, 2024 at 4:22 p.m.
Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office Merit Board heard updates Thursday about the Jail Chemical Addiction Program and Kosciusko Community Recovery Program.
JCAP Coordinator Casey Trombley said her current JCAP class of eight men is on Week 13 of the program. This class started with the same eight men and is the first time in JCAP's history that a participant has not been removed.
Board member Shari Benyousky asked Trombley if the graduates continue spending time together once they're released from custody.
"I encourage them to keep in touch if they're comfortable with that when they get out," said Trombley. "From past classes, that is something that's occurred. The last ladies' class, a couple of them really connected and they still hang out, they're good supports for one another. The last guys' class, they spend time together, a couple of them got an apartment together. I encourage them to keep those relationships up, but that's on their own terms."
KCRP Resource Navigator Shanna Wallen said in four months, she's helped 51 inmates who have been released, with 26 of those individuals being released on time served.
"I've only had one person return so far," said Wallen.
Wallen also noted the Kosciusko County Jail is close to getting two peer coaches and said a public meeting on Oct. 21 to inform the community about KCRP was very successful.
"I've had a lot of people contact me wanting to be mentors with people when they get out of the jail because that's a huge piece of KCRP," said Wallen. "When (inmates) walk out the door, they still need to have support and not feel like they're doing this alone."
Kosciusko County Sheriff Jim Smith commended Trombley and Wallen for their work.
The board also:
• Learned the drug prescription box has been moved from the sheriff's office's lobby back to the west end of the office's parking lot.
• Heard deputy Shaun Mudd received the Kosciusko County Community Foundation 2024 Heart of Gold award.
• Heard Lt. Travis Shively completed his 2024 West Point Leadership training.
• Remembered Sgt. Jeffery Shaw, who passed away 15 years ago after a vehicle accident while he was on-duty.
KCSO Merit Board's next meeting is Dec. 12.
