SYRACUSE - Wawasee  Community School  Corporation announced it has been awarded $35,652.63 through the Indiana Department  of Education’s (IDOE) Early Literacy Achievement Grant.
This recognition reflects WCSC’s unwavering commitment to improving early literacy outcomes and celebrates the incredible dedication of Wawasee’s educators in building strong foundational reading skills for their youngest learners, according to a news release from WCSC.
The Early Literacy Achievement Grant, established through House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1001-2023, rewards schools and teachers for improving students’ reading proficiency as measured by IREAD-3 performance data. Wawasee’s significant progress in early literacy demonstrates their steadfast commitment to ensuring every child develops the skills needed to achieve academic success, the release states.
WCSC’s award was determined by several factors, including growth in reading proficiency and the number of students who passed IREAD-3 in 2024. Wawasee shared that their award amount more than doubled this year, outperforming neighboring districts, many of which saw no increase or even a decline in funding.
This funding will go directly to supporting the staff who make a difference in the classroom every day. Cash stipends will be provided to teachers, instructional coaches and other staff who play a pivotal role in delivering literacy instruction for students in pre-k through third grade.
"Wawasee staff will receive more per individual than any other surrounding district — something we are extremely proud to do," said Dr. Shelly Wilfong, assistant superintendent of WCSC.
“Our teachers and staff have shown incredible dedication to ensuring all students have the foundational reading skills they need to succeed,” Wilfong said. “This grant is a testament to their hard work and our collective focus on early literacy. We are honored to receive this recognition and support from the IDOE.”
This grant aligns with Indiana’s statewide goal of ensuring 95% of third-grade students pass IREAD-3 by 2027, further highlighting Wawasee’s commitment to literacy excellence, the release states.
