Outdoor Warning Sirens To Be Tested Monthly

December 12, 2024 at 5:04 p.m.

Kosciusko County Public Safety will be implementing a monthly test of its outdoor warning sirens, for those sirens activated from the Kosciusko County's 911 Communications Center.
Monthly testing will begin in January and will occur on the first Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. going forward. In the event that severe weather is forecast, the testing of the sirens will be postponed to the following month.
Previously, testing of these sirens was performed once annually during Indiana's severe weather preparedness week each March. Monthly testing will better prepare and exercise Kosciusko County's capabilities to warn of an impending threat.
These sirens are commonly referred to as a "tornado siren," but the correct term is an "outdoor warning siren" and intended for people who are outdoors within earshot of the siren. In a real situation, activation of the siren is an indication for persons outdoors to immediately seek shelter indoors, preferably in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of the building, away from windows, and then listen to local news or a NOAA weather radio for updates on the warning.
