WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The strong start to the season for Grace’s women’s soccer team continued on Wednesday in a rout of Indiana Tech.
The Lancers used four different goalscorers in a 4-0 win over the Warriors at 1st Source Bank Field. Rosalie Gefrorer had a goal and two assists to lead Grace’s attack.
Grace improves to 3-0 on the year after Wednesday’s home opener.
Already on the young season, 10 different players for Grace have registered a goal or an assist.
The Lancers have outscored their first three opponents 8-0 and have not yielded a goal in 270 minutes of action.
It did not take long for Grace to assert itself offensively in the match. The Lancers quickly grabbed control in possession and moved the ball repeatedly into Indiana Tech’s end of the field.
The opening goal came in the 10th minute. Cassidy Felger alertly intercepted the clearance from the Warriors’ goalkeeper and headed the ball to Abby Hodkin.
Hodkin found herself in open space and chipped the goalkeeper on her first touch as the ball bounced into the empty net.
Hodkin has now scored a goal in each of Grace’s three matches.
The Warriors had a golden opportunity to tie the score 10 minutes later with a penalty kick after a Grace handball in the box. Indiana Tech’s PK struck the crossbar, however, and Grace was quick to make Indiana Tech pay.
Less than three minutes after the penalty kick, Grace doubled its lead. Rosalie Gefrorer created space on the right side of the field and fired a low cross in front of the goal. The ball was parried by the goalkeeper, but Hannah Medlin pounced on the loose ball and fired in her first goal as a Lancer.
Grace’s goalscoring was not done in the half, however. Five minutes after Medlin’s goal, Grace scored again.
Gefrorer and Audrey Abel linked up after a corner kick to play a dangerous ball into the box. Zoe Mueller connected with the cross, using her head to redirect the ball inside the far post to make the score 3-0.
The Lancers charged into halftime comfortably on top; they owned an 11-4 shot advantage in the half.
The second half saw Grace continue to dominate time on the ball. The Lancers possessed the ball cleanly and limited the Warriors’ chances to attack.
Grace shot 11 times after halftime and added a fourth goal midway into the half.
Tori Twombly sent Feline Abbo on a run on the left edge of the field. Abbo drew two defenders but still weaved her way into a dangerous crossing position.
Abbo placed her cross directly in front of the goal, and Gefrorer timed her run to perfection, finishing off the cross in the 76th minute.
Grace finished the match with a commanding 22-6 advantage in shots, including 10 shots on goal. They also had all eight corner kicks in the match.
Gefrorer finished the match with a goal and two assists.
Sofia Williams recorded her third shutout of the year. She was protected well by Lilli Oberhoff, Jaylin Young, Mueller, Liz Maciejewski and Jasmin Slump.
The Lancers are home again on Saturday, hosting Rio Grande at 12 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
