A fantastic fall for Warsaw golfer Abbey Peterson concluded on Saturday at the IHSAA State Finals at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. Peterson finished the two-day competition at +7, good enough to finish tied for tenth in the state.
“It was really crazy. It was always a goal of mine to go to state and play well but until I was actually doing it, it seemed so far away,” Peterson said. “My short game really helped me out on day one and on the second day I got back to playing my game and I think it turned out pretty well.”
Peterson’s top ten finish at state automatically qualifies her to be selected to the all-state team.
Peterson started the tournament with a 76 on Friday, shooting a +4 40 on the front nine before following it up with a very solid 36 on the back nine, including one bogey and one par.
“When I finished my round on the first day I was in 21st with some people still playing,” Peterson said. “After it was over my coach came up to me and said ‘Abbey, you’re top ten’ and that’s when it kind of hit me.”
Peterson began day two on fire, shooting a -1 on the front nine, putting her in striking distance to finish in the top five. Through 12 holes of the second day’s action, the junior was back at +4 after shooting an even par, putting her in eighth place. She would wrap up the back nine with a 40 to put her at +7 for the tournament.
“It made me really excited about what I’m capable of and what I can do next year,” Peterson said. “I spent a lot of time this summer working on my game with a goal of making it to state so to be able to do that, I feel so accomplished right now.”
Another one of Peterson’s goals is to play golf in college. She hopes to play down south, citing Tampa Bay and South Carolina as some premier destinations.
“I just want to thank my coaches and teammates for all that they’ve helped me achieve this season and my career,” Peterson, “They’ve all given me so much support, especially Olivia [Robinson-Gay].”
The only player in the field to shoot under par was the state champion, senior Samantha Brown of Westfield, who finished with a -2. Four different players finished tied for second place at +2, while two players finished tied for both sixth and eighth place at +5 and +6.
