GOSHEN – The oval in Foreman field was the venue for the 2023 IHSAA boys’ track and field sectional hosted by Goshen High School Thursday Night.

The Warsaw Tigers finished the evening with a runner-up finish in the total team score with 109 points behind 2023 champion Elkhart (135.5 team points). The other area school at the Goshen sectional, the Wawasee Warriors (31 points), finished eighth among the twelve teams who scored in Thursday’s meet.

Both schools have athletes who survived and advanced to the May 25 regional meet to be hosted by Warsaw.

The Tigers placed first among three events (100m hurdles, high jump, and pole vault), and the Warriors landed a blue-ribbon performance in the 200-meter dash.

Warsaw, in similar fashion to its Northern Lakes Conference meet title performance, racked up points with numerous second and third place finishes providing them more than a dozen athletes getting one more week of competition.

The Tigers scored 58 of their 109 team points earning second and third place finishes, and 21 additional points among fourth through eight place finishes.

Jordan Randall, who cleared heights of 6’9’ during the indoor season for Warsaw, captured first place in the high jump clearing 6’7” – his best performance since a 6’5” showing in the chilly climes of a late March dual meet.

Randall’s Tiger teammate Blake Keene won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.37 seconds. Keene’s second place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (41.33 sec.) was good enough for a regional berth in both hurdle events.

Morgan Johnson’s 14’4” height in the pole vault was tops at the sectional Thursday.

Wawasee’s Lucas Linder (200-meter dash, 22.64 sec.) was the area’s fourth winning performance at Goshen. The Warrior sprinter will join teammates Cam Zimmerman, Bradyn Pike, and Hunter Tinkey in the 400-meter relay on May 25 thanks to a second-place time of 43.75 seconds.

The Warriors scored 13 of their 31 points among fourth to eighth-place finishes.

Warsaw’s additional second-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay came from the efforts of the quartet of Johnson, Jackson Winey, Emiliano Juarez-Torres, and Colton Martin (3:27.72).

Martin will also compete in next week’s regional meet in the Lake City in the 400-meter dash (third place, 52.03 seconds).

Martin will be joined by several other Tigers who automatically qualified by finishing third in their events.

Lady Tiger middle distance runner Mikayla Mimnaugh won’t be the only family member competing in regional action this coming week. Her brother, Tyler, earned third place in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs with respective times of 4:24.98, and 9:47.74.

Sam Allebach (300m hurdles) also grabbed a third-place finish (42.35 sec.), joining the aforementioned 100-meter hurdle champ, Keene.

The 3,200-metere relay quartet of Garrett Hall, Rick Orr, Gabe Klein, and Tyler Swartz turned in a time of 8:03.95 in their third-place finish, and Matt Marsh (pole vault, 12-06) also left Goshen Thursday evening with a white ribbon.

Regional field events in Warsaw’s boys’ track and field regional will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25.
