SYRACUSE - On June 25, the annual Patriotic Pops concert will be on the lawn of the Oakwood Inn on Lake Wawasee. The honor guard from Syracuse Post #223 will kick off the event at 7:30 p.m.

For several years, area residents have brought their chairs or a blanket to enjoy the concert, according to a provided news release.

“Playing the concert at Oakwood is assisting the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in our mission to share live orchestral music with everyone,” said conductor Troy Webdell.

The “Pops” concert features popular and well-known orchestral music, stated the release. A full 58-member symphony orchestra will perform the concert, including woodwind, brass, percussion and string instruments.

Chautauqua has arranged for a face painter and balloon artist to be available starting at 7 p.m. as entertainment for children. Stop by the Chautauqua tent to receive a small American flag and glow light.

To honor the American spirit of freedom and adventure, Webdell has chosen a variety of music. The first featured music will be the “Star Spangled Banner” followed by the theme from “The Magnificent Seven.” The Armed Forces salute will be next followed by “Ragtime” musical selections. Three more pieces include the “National Emblem March,” selections from “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Blue Tango.” “Washington Post March” leads to “Sing Out America” followed by “Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra “from the popular “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” The final three pieces will be “Raiders March” from “Raiders of the Lost Ark”; “1812 Overture”; and “Stars and Stripes.”

“People enjoy the Patriotic Pops because we perform music that people recognize,” said Webb. The event is free, open to the public and ends at 9:30 p.m.

Prior to the Pops, starting at 4:30 p.m., as part of Chautauqua’s Patriotic Speaker Series, a program titled “First Ladies, First!” will be performed at the Wawasee High School auditorium.  This event is also free to attend.

The Pops has planned to play at other venues after the Oakwood presentation. They will play Pokagon State Park on June 29; Dekalb County Outdoor Theater on June 30; Parkview Field in Fort Wayne on July 1; Madison Street Plaza in Decatur on July 3; and Bixler Lake Park in Kendallville on July 4.
