Lancer Basketball Teams Split Doubleheader With Huntington

Karlee Feldman led the charge with her 14th double-double of the season. The junior center went off for 21 points and 14 rebounds.
The first quarter was not a picture of efficiency for the Lady Lancers. Grace turned the ball over seven times and shot just 33 percent from the floor.
But Grace’s defense kept the Lady Lancers within range. After one quarter, Grace trailed by three at 16-13.
Grace’s offense got back on track to begin the second quarter, however. The Lady Lancers generated high-percentage looks by attacking fast and attacking through the post.
Karlee Feldman picked up eight quick points in the quarter to help Grace surge ahead.
Grace continued to roll, pulling ahead by 11 after a 3-pointer from Kaylee Patton.
The Lady Lancers took a 38-27 lead into halftime. After shooting 33 percent in the first quarter, Grace made 61 percent of its looks in the second stanza.
Feldman (10 points, 5 rebounds) and Kiersten Findley (11 points, 5 boards) were key figures in the first half.
Grace continued to open its advantage in the third quarter. Maddie Ryman and Patton hit early shots to push the lead to 14 points.
The lead reached as many as 18-points after Peyton Murphy converted on a deep shot beyond the arc.
The Lady Lancers offense continued to hit on all cylinders as they made 53 percent of their shots in the quarter and took a 60-45 lead into the final stanza.
Grace’s lead hovered between 18 and 14 points in the fourth quarter as Grace put the finishing touches on the 76-61 victory.
In addition to her 21 point double-double, Feldman also turned away two shots. Ryman had a stellar outing with 17 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds.
“It's a weird schedule that we played this year but I am proud of the maturity our girls showed,” said Grace head coach Dan Davis. “After beating Huntington last weekend I thought the girls proved their veteran leadership with their effort and attention to detail in practice this week. The Crossroads League always feels like a boxing match and we will take Sunday and Monday to get ready for another round of games next week.
The Lady Lancers have a pair of huge matchups next week. Grace will host No. 6 Marian next Wednesday at 7 p.m. and will travel to No. 7 IWU on Saturday for a 1 p.m. showdown.
Men’s Comeback Falls Short
WINONA LAKE - A heavyweight battle between No. 6 Grace and Huntington (receiving votes) went to the Foresters by the score of 75-70 on Saturday.
The high-profile battle was deservedly played in front of a near-sellout crowd in a frenzied environment. Huntington pulled out the victory as Grace’s early turnovers and second-half missed free throws caused the Lancers (18-3, 8-3 Crossroads League) to slip.
Grace’s offense was sluggish out of the gate. The Lancers were held to four points for the first 5:20 of action.
Grace fell behind 8-2 early, but Cade Gibbs scored five points in a row, including a triple to level the score at 9-9.
The Lancers managed to pull ahead 28-24 with 7:00 left in the half after a flashy fastbreak play from Ian Scott and Jake Wadding. However, Huntington countered with 10 unanswered points to surge in front.
The Lancers were plagued with turnovers in the first half. Grace lost the ball 14 times, directly leading to 19 points for HU.
The Foresters, on the other hand, turned the ball over three times which led to no Grace points.
Huntington took advantage to pull away before halftime. The Foresters led 45-34 at halftime after canning a stepback 3-pointer just before the clock expired.
Grace (50 percent) had a slightly better shooting percentage than Huntington (47 percent) in the first half, and the Lancers also grabbed seven more rebounds. But Grace’s 14 turnovers proved to be the difference.
After being held to two points in the first half, Frankie Davidson came out aggressively to start the second half. He ripped off seven points over the first four minutes to give Grace some confidence.
The Lancers pulled within four with 14 minutes to play, and the game remained a nailbiter for the rest of the way.
Grace created its offense through transition, attacking quickly and effectively. A variety of quick scores kept an electric crowd at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center on its feet.
But each time the Lancers seemed poised to take the lead, Huntington hit a timely shot.
The lead shrunk to two with eight minutes to play after a fastbreak layup from Jakob Gibbs, but an and-1 from HU gave the visitors breathing room.
With 5:45 on the clock, a layup from Scott brought Grace within one; but the Foresters answered with a triple on the other end of the court.
The Lancers still trailed by five with 2:15 remaining, but two free throws and a layup made the score 69-68. Grace forced a missed shot and was fouled with just under a minute remaining.
But Grace missed both of its free throws to either tie or take the lead, and HU sank two free throws on the ensuing possession.
Jakob Gibbs quickly hit a pull-up jumper with 18 seconds to play to cut HU’s margin to 71-70, but the Foresters hit two more foul shots again. Grace had a look at a game-tying 3-pointer, but the shot from the right wing glanced off the back of the rim, allowing the visitors to secure the upset.

Wadding poured in 12 points (6-8 FG) and five rebounds off the bench, and Scott also had 10 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
Elijah Malone just missed a double-double with 8 points, 11 boards and 2 blocks, Davidson had 9 points, 8 boards and 5 assists, and Carter Stoltzfus passed out seven assists without a turnover.
Grace finished the game shooting 48 percent from the floor, despite going just 3 of 17 (18 percent) on 3-pointers. After making all five of its free throws in the first half, Grace struggled after halftime by shooting 6 of 14 (43 percent).
The Lancers have a stiff pair of tests ahead. Grace will play twice on the road, taking on No. 16 Marian on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Grace Races Well At Indiana Tech
FORT WAYNE - Grace’s track and field teams got to compete at a brand-new indoor facility on Friday for the Indiana Tech Invitational.
The meet officially opened up the Doug Edgar Indoor Track Facility.
Grace posted several impressive results, including a few NAIA national standards.
Kylie Sauder hit an NAIA “B” standard in the 1,000-meter race. Her time of 3:01.31 placed second in the race, and Anna Hulstedt was not far behind in fifth place at 3:08.07.
In the 3,000, Carmen Trier (10:51.48) and Mallory Hiatt (10:56.60) both finished in the top-eight at the meet, and Mackenzie DeLong nabbed an eighth-place showing in the shot put (38-feet-7.75).
Tara Friesen ran a 5:34.48 mile to finish in fifth, and Karsyn Stewart (5:56.31) also finished under six minutes. Stewart also showed well in the 800 with a sixth-place time of 2:45.19, and Anna Buckner was one place behind at 2:52.24.
On the men’s side, the Lancers dominated the mile. Bryan Hernandez-Rios won the race, setting the facility record in the process, with an NAIA “B” time of 4:15.22. Logan Rufenacht was a second away from the NAIA mark, placing second at 4:18.58.
Dimitri Margaritidis (4:21.44) and Carson Martin (4:37.66) finished fourth and ninth respectively in the mile, and Brady Hunsberger (4:39.95) was 11th.
Grace had two top-10 finishers in the 3,000 as well. Korry Hamlin was runner-up at 8:52.60, and Brandon Kleber grabbed eighth place with a time of 9:03.55.
Derek O’Connor was seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:02.67.
Zaryn Rumfelt launched the shot put 47-1.75 to grab third place, and Brock Lengacher earned ninth in the weight throw (47-8).
Tanner Sallee set the facility record in the 600, winning the race with a time of 1:22.87. His time was just over a second away from the NAIA qualifying mark. Luke Smith was sixth in the race at 1:25.75.
Smith was also sixth in the 1,000 (2:40.81) with Carter Clear finishing three seconds behind him (2:43.62).
The Lancers compete again next Friday at Grand Valley State for the Bill Clinger Classic.
