Peru at Warsaw
Warsaw split a pair of games over the weekend, defeating Peru 62-52 at the Tiger Den Saturday night in their second contest in two days. The Tigers snapped a short two game skid to improve to 7-6.
Playing the game without leader Jaxson Gould, Warsaw got big performances from Brandt Martin (16 points, five rebounds) and Drew Heckaman (15 points, four rebounds) to pull away in the second half. Luke Yeager added eight points.
On Friday night, the Tigers suffered a heartbreaking 51-48 loss at Goshen. The RedHawks won the game on a buzzer-beating three. Gould had 16 points and three assists in the loss. Heckaman added eleven points. Warsaw is now 2-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference.
The team will look to get a conference win at home Friday night against Concord.
Lakeland Christian at Trinity
Lakeland Christian won its sixth game in a row Saturday night, defeating South Bend Trinity 31-28 on the road. The Cougars are now 11-2 this winter.
Seth Martin carried the load on offense once again, finishing with 21 points, including the game-winning bucket from three with three seconds remaining. Alex Cook contributed six points.
LCA plays at Argos Friday.
Tippecanoe Valley at Rochester
Tippecanoe Valley looked dominant in a win over their rival Rochester Zebras Friday night. The Vikings defeated Rochester 48-24 on the road to improve to 10-3 this season, 3-1 in the Three Rivers Conference.
Tayde Kiser, Nolan Cumberland and Kyler Johnson all finished in double figures, with Kiser leading the way with 13 points and four assists. Johnson led the team with nine rebounds to go with his 10 points.
Tippy Valley hosts Southwood on Friday night in another TRC game.
Wawasee at Mishawaka
Wawasee dropped its fourth game in a row Friday night, falling 69-43 at Mishawaka. The Warriors are now 4-9 this season, 0-3 in the NLC. Wawasee will try to get its first conference win Friday when the team hosts Plymouth.
Whitko at Southwood
Whitko is still searching for its first TRC win of the season after falling 62-40 to Southwood Friday night. The Wildcats are now 2-9, 0-4 in the TRC.
Kyler Krull continued an impressive junior year for Whitko, finishing with 16 points and seven rebounds. Easton Grable also added 10 points for the Wildcats.
Whitko hosts Northfield Friday.
Culver Community at Triton
Triton picked up a Hoosier North Athletic Conference win Friday night, defeating Culver Community 26-24. The Trojans are now 6-4, 3-0 in the HNAC.
The win was the 300th in the career of Triton head coach Jason Groves. Cole Shively had 12 points and Dante Workman had eight. Triton plays at Elkhart Christian Tuesday night.
Girls Basketball
Goshen at Warsaw
The Warsaw Tigers girls basketball team clinched at least a share of their second straight Northern Lakes Conference title Saturday by thrashing Goshen 63-27. The Tigers are now 15-4 this season, 6-0 in the NLC.
Warsaw shared the ball efficiently once again, with three players finishing with double digit scoring totals. Joslyn Bricker had 17 points off the bench on 80% shooting. Alexis Neely had 12 points and Abbey Peterson added eleven.
Warsaw plays at Homestead Tuesday night and will look to win the conference outright Saturday at Concord.
Rochester at Tippecanoe Valley
Tippecanoe Valley remained undefeated in Three Rivers Conference play Saturday, defeating Rochester 26-15 at home. The Lady Vikings are now 15-3 this winter, 6-0 in the TRC.
It was a slow paced game all night long, with both teams combining for seven points in the first quarter and14 at halftime. Kaydence Mellott scored eleven points for Valley while Lily Ault added six.
The Lady Vikings host Peru on Tuesday night.
Mishawaka at Wawasee
Wawasee picked up another NLC victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Mishawka 40-35 on the road. The Warriors are now 9-10, 4-2 in the NLC.
Olivia Horn filled up the stat sheet, finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks. Mackenzie Hackleman finished with 14 points and a game-high six steals.
The Warriors host Whitko Tuesday night.
Whitko at Southwood
Whitko dropped a conference game to Southwood Saturday, falling 66-40 on the road. The Lady ‘Cats are now 7-9 this season, 0-6 in the TRC.
Braisha Harrison had 12 points to lead the team in scoring once again. Brookelynn Coburn had nine points and six rebounds. Whitko plays at Wawasee Tuesday.
Manchester at Wabash
Manchester dropped their TRC game with Wabash Saturday night, falling 57-46. The Lady Squires are now 6-13 this season, 2-6 in the TRC.
Brookelynn Buzzard had 18 points for Manchester. The Lady Squires play at Rochester Saturday evening.
Lakeland Christian at West Central
Lakeland Christian dropped a tough game to West Central Saturday, falling 59-49 on the road.
Mattie Stonebreaker had 21 points while Katie Reimink added 18. LCA is back in action Tuesday at Fort Wayne Canterbury.
Culver Community at Triton
Triton picked up a HNAC win Friday night, their first of the season, in a 30-23 win over Culver Community. The Trojans are now 12-6, 1-4 in the HNAC.
Addyson Viers had nine points and five rebounds. Kinsey Atkins had eight points. Triton plays in the Bi-County Tournament against Bremen Tuesday.
Wrestling
NLC Tournament
The Warsaw Wrestling team competed in the Northern Lakes Conference tournament at Goshen High School on Saturday. With some lineup changes and some really tough weight classes, the Tigers found themselves battling uphill for most of the tournament and landed in the 7th spot after tying for 3rd in the dual season.
There were several bright spots for Warsaw, with eight wrestlers earning their way into the placement rounds.
The Tigers' only finalist was Bryce McNees, who picked up a second-place finish in the 106 pound bracket. McNees cleaned up his half of the bracket by earning two pins to make it into the finals.
A handful of Tigers took third-place finishes, starting at 182 and working through the rest of the upper weights.
Jaxson Walters lost a tight contest in the semi-finals at 182, but picked up three impressive wins for the day to land his third place finish. His solid outing for the day along with his work during the season earned him an at-large All-NLC selection by the coaches.
At 195, Nathaniel Rosas put together one of his best tournaments to date. His workman-like performance in the bracket helped him grind out a 3-1 record to take third.
At 220 pounds, Kameron Kauffman saw his first varsity action for the season and made the most of it. The sophomore big man picked up a forfeit to start the day, then earned two pins on the conso side of the bracket - giving the weight class champion trouble along the way.
Isaac Beam moved up to 285 for the weekend and put together an impressive showing. An early round pin was followed up with a tough scrap in the semi-finals. Beam battled back in the consos with a couple of solid wins to land his third place finish.
Elias Garza wrestled through one of the tougher weight classes at 120. Garza went 2-2 to take 4th place in the bracket, dropping the two matches by just two points each. In his two victories, he racked up 32 points as he pushed the offensive pace.
Bryson Brown was part of another strong weight class at 160. Falling into the consos early, Bryson picked up a quick pin on an impressive toss and a major decision to close the day with a 5th place finish. In similar fashion to the 120's, Brown's only losses came by narrow margins.
Freshman grappler, Gabe Veit was able to keep making progress on his climb in the 132 weight class. Veit went 2-2 for the tournament, picking up two pins and earning 5th place.
The Tigers will have two more opportunities to prepare for the sectional round of the IHSAA tournament. Warsaw will travel to Tipton on Tuesday, then hosts Fort Wayne Northside for Senior Night on Thursday.
