Tippecanoe Valley at Plymouth
Tippecanoe Valley earned their fourth win in a row Saturday night, defeating Plymouth 58-49 on the road. The Vikings are now 9-3 this season.
Tippy Valley’s one-two punch of seniors Tayde Kiser and Nolan Cumberland were fantastic once again, with Kiser leading the way in the scoring department with 18 points and Cumberland right behind him with 16. Riley Sheperd and Stephen Akase also reached double figures, finishing with 10 apiece.
Tippecanoe Valley also earned a win on Friday night, this one of the conference variety. The Vikings defeated Northfield 70-32 to move to 2-1 in the Three Rivers Conference. Cumberland scored 24 points in the game.
The Vikings have a big game on Friday night, when the team travels to Rochester to take on their rival Zebras.
Manchester at Fort Wayne Canterbury
It was a busy weekend for Squires basketball, as Manchester earned two wins in two days, the second coming at Fort Wayne Canterbury on Saturday night in the form of a 54-51 win. The Squires are now 9-2.
Gavin Betten had another monster game, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Gavin Martin added 10 points. On Friday night, Manchester defeated North Miami 97-38 in a massive Three Rivers Conference win. Betten scored 21 in that game as well.
Manchester hosts Wabash on Friday night and will look to remain undefeated (2-0) in the TRC.
Wawasee at Homestead
Wawasee fell 49-31 on the road to Homestead Saturday night. The Warriors are now 4-8 this season and will look to pick up their first Northern Lakes Conference win of the season (0-2) at Mishawaka Friday night.
Lakewood Park Christian at Whitko
Whitko earned its second win of the season Saturday night, defeating Lakewood Park Christian 64-53 at home. The Wildcats are now 2-8 on the year. Whitko travels to Southwood Friday night for a showdown with Southwood.
Clinton Christian at Lakeland Christian
Lakeland Christian extended its win streak to five games on Saturday with a 50-15 victory over Clinton Christian. The Cougars are now an impressive 10-2 this season.
Seth Martin scored 22 points to lead all scorers as well as outscore his opponent singlehandedly. Alex Cook contributed 13 points. LCA also picked up a conference win on Friday night, defeating Elkhart Christian 58-47 to improve to 1-1 in the Hoosier Plains Conference. Martin scored 22 points in that game as well, with Ben Jackson adding 14.
The Cougars face off with Trinity on Saturday afternoon in another conference matchup.
Girls Basketball
Warsaw at Northridge
A marquee matchup between two top teams in the Northern Lakes Conference lived up to its billing Saturday night, with Warsaw escaping Middlebury with a 53-52 win over Northridge. The Tigers are now 13-4 this season and are now the lone undefeated team in the NLC with a 4-0 mark.
The Tigers dominated on the glass, outrebounding Northridge 31-15, including a whopping 16 offensive rebounds. Brooke Zartman corralled the most important offensive board of the game with two seconds left and the game tied. Zartman would be fouled going up for a shot and would make one of her two free throws to give Warsaw the victory. Zartman finished with 13 points. Abbey Peterson led Warsaw with 17 points.
The Tigers will look to stay perfect in conference play Wednesday when the team travels to Mishawaka.
NorthWood at Wawasee
Wawasee picked up a conference win Saturday night, defeating NorthWood 45-38 at the Hardwood Teepee. The Lady Warriors are now 8-9 this season, 3-2 in the NLC.
Mackenzie Hackleman had 12 points and Kaydence Shepherd added eleven. Wawasee faces off against a tough Columbia City team Tuesday night at home.
North Miami at Manchester
A massive second half for the visitors was the difference in a conference contest between North Miami and Manchester Saturday night, with North Miami coming out with a 72-32 victory. The Lady Squires are now 6-11 this season, 2-4 in the TRC.
Brookelynn Buzzard had 14 points and two assists. Molly Schannep added five point and five rebounds. Manchester is back in action with another conference game Wednesday at Peru.
Whitko at Rochester
Whitko fell 36-27 to Rochester Saturday in a defensive battle. The Lady ‘Cats are now 6-8 this season, 0-5 in the TRC.
Kloe Krieg led Whitko with nine points. Gwen Howard added eight. Whitko plays at Lakewood Park Christian on Thursday.
Argos at Lakeland Christian
Lakeland Christian Academy Girls Varsity basketball team fell to Argos on Saturday night, losing 65-45. LCA is now 8-4 this winter.
Senior Mattie Stonebraker led the way with 20 points. Reese Stonebraker and Hanna Stout added 10 points each on the night. Sophomore Katie Reimink rounded out the scoring with 5 points. The Lady Cougars will be back in action Thursday on the road at Northfield High School
Wrestling
The Warsaw Tiger Wrestling program had a busy weekend on the mat.
On Friday, the girls' team went to Penn High School for the IHSGW Regional.
This event is similar to the IHSAA semi-state as all schools that feed into a particular site will participate in the same regional, and only the top 4 wrestlers qualify for state.
The Tigers had three girls participate - Kynna Yoder, Mariana Castro, and Emily Dawson.
Warsaw's top performer was Mariana Castro - placing 5th in a difficult 23-person split-bracket at 126. She went 4-1 on the night and will serve as an alternate for the state meet on Friday.
Emily Dawson finished 6th in the 138 group. After battling through a grueling bracket, she finished the night at 3-3.
Kynna Yoder earned a pinfall victory early in the 120 bracket, but ended her night at 1-2.
With the IHSAA labeling Girls Wrestling as an emerging sport prior to the season, this was Warsaw's first official team and they did an outstanding job of representing WCHS.
The JV wrestlers went to South Bend Riley on Saturday for the 21st Wildcat JV Invitational.
The Tigers had a lot of individual successes with 9 wrestlers picking up at least two wins. With the large tournament brackets finding placement at the tournament was a tall task, but Warsaw brought home five top-five finishes.
Kameron Kauffman went 4-0 at 220 pounds to land Warsaw's only championship.
At 195 pounds, Mason Gabrich picked up a second-place finish with a 3-1 record.
Parker Dippon was 3-1 in the 138 pound bracket, which was good enough to earn a third-place finish.
KC Smith at 120, and Leo Castro at 126 were both 2-2 - landing them in the fifth spot in their brackets.
In varsity action, the Tigers went to East Noble for their annual invitational tournament.
Warsaw went in with a couple of different faces and were a little short-handed, but were able to finish in 4th place at the 12-team tournament and put together a quality day moving toward the state tournament series.
The Tigers earned top-five finishes in 9 weight classes, including 4 finalists.
Jaxson Walters went 3-0 at 182 pounds to bring home Warsaw's only championship.
Elias Garza at 120, Isaac Beam at 220, and Gideon Castro at 285 were each runner-up in their weight classes with 2-1 records.
Bryce McNees at 106, and Nathan Rosas at 195 went 3-1 to earn third place.
Danny Moon at 152, and Bryson Brown at 160 battled to 2-2 records for fourth place.
In his first varsity tournament of the season, Grant Cook put together a strong outing and landed a fifth place finish.
Warsaw will travel to Goshen on Saturday, 1/14 to compete in the NLC tournament.
Looking ahead, the Tigers' final two duals of the season will come on 1/17 with a trip to Tipton, and 1/19 as they host Fort Wayne Northside for Senior Night.
