Local High School Sports Recaps For 2/13

Both the Northern Lakes Conference and Hoosier North Athletic Conference postseason awards were released Monday, with local athletes being recognized across both conferences.
In the Northern Lakes Conference, the Warsaw Tigers had four players selected to the all-conference team. Freshmen Joslyn Bricker and Brooke Zartman as well as sophomores Brooke Winchester and Abbey Peterson were all selected to the team for the first time.
Wawasee was also well represented. Sophomore Mackenzie Hackleman was selected to the all-conference team while fellow underclassman Olivia Horn was selected as an honorable mention. Warrior head coach Derek Gilreath was selected as the conference’s coach of the year after leading Wawasee to 5-2 record in the NLC, good enough for third in the conference. It was the team’s first top-three finish since the Warriors won the NLC in the 2008-09 season.
In the Hoosier North Athletic Conference, Triton had two upperclassmen selected to the all-conference team. Senior Kinsey Atkins and junior Addyson Viers were selected to the team for the second season in a row.
The Times-Union would like to congratulate these local athletes for their fantastic seasons.
Bowling
Warsaw bowling capped off what was a phenomenal season with a third place finish in the state tournament. The Tigers earned the No. 4 seed after the preliminary round of the finals and beat Avon in the stepladder finals before falling to eventual state champs Highland. Warsaw will be back next season and will try to make it three trips to the state finals in a row.
Wrestling
The Tiger Wrestling team finished the 2022-23 season at the East Chicago Central Semi-State.
Warsaw had three competitors on Saturday and put together some quality wrestling, but wasn't able to secure a trip to the state finals.
Senior 182 pounder Jaxson Walters rallied late in his opening match to earn a pinfall and move to the ticket round. Walters finished his season at 34-9 to lead the team in wins.
Junior 106 wrestler Bryce McNees also put together a gritty performance in the opening round. McNees earned a late reversal to move into the ticket round - ultimately losing to the weight class champion in round two.
Junior 120 wrestler Elias Garza put together a strong match in the morning session but wasn't able to advance.
