Young Chargers Spoil Tiger Soccer Senior Night 2-0

A good-sized gathering of Tiger soccer faithful honored Zoe Bergan, Rylee Burns, Taylon Chastain, Bonnie Hampton, Jordan Love, Kiana Rager, Paige Smythe, and Macy Wayne on a cool, breezy early fall night.
These seniors have compiled an aggregate record of 42-23-7, and a 25-1-1 mark among Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) foes.
The Chargers and the Tigers finished their previous two matches with draws in 2020, and 2021 but Tuesday night Carroll’s team speed and solid defense resulted in a side walking off the pitch with a win.
“They're young, they're fast, (and) they're gonna be very good in the next couple of years,” Warsaw head coach Jon Hoover remarked. “You're gonna see (Carroll) do some really good things.”
The younger, opportunistic guests capitalized on the building pregame sentiment among their opposing elders.
“Having (just) celebrated seniors that are so key to this program… it was very emotional starting the game,” Hoover said. “They caught us on our heels not ready to go and… two hours later we're still playing catch up for the rest of the game.”
The Tigers’ side occasionally doesn’t open their matches in the form Hoover would like to see on a consistent basis. Consequently, the young Chargers exploited them attacking the 18-meter line with three forwards early.
Freshman Brooke Burrough drilled a goal at the third minute. Sophomore Faith Bennett added another Charger goal at the 20th minute, and the teams went to their respective benches as the first half score stood 2-0 in favor of the guests.
Most of the first half was played on Carroll’s side of the field with a Tiger side well-known for their smooth ball movement having trouble getting remotely near the 18-meter line, but Warsaw came out in the second half more aggressively still, however, falling short on limited scoring opportunities.
“I think we just didn't play our style tonight in the first half, and second half came out a lot better,” Hoover noted. “We moved the ball better, we put them on their heels, and just didn't get one to fall in.”
“We didn't put the balls in the right places so we kind of played into their speed a little bit. Their back line did a great job running with us. We put (Carroll) in a position to succeed.”
Warsaw (10-4-2, 6-0 NLC) will travel to Northridge Thursday 7: 15 p.m. aiming to win the conference title outright. The Tigers already clinched at least a share of their fourth consecutive NLC crown.
Warsaw will launch their postseason Tuesday October 4 in Fort Wayne where they’ll have a rematch with the Northrup Bruins (9-4-1), who were tied with the Tigers 2-all before Warsaw streaked away with a 5-2 regular season win just over two weeks ago.
