Although attempts to reach company officials were not successful, InkFreeNews was given a letter from Bob Meekin, vice president of human resources for KGPCo, announcing the company’s decision to eliminate 189 jobs and close the plant on North Detroit Street in Warsaw.
The letter was issued to workers last week in accordance with state law requiring the notification.
However, the state’s website that tracks those announcements did not list KGPCo until Friday.
The letter reads, in part, “We regret to inform you that due to a decrease in FlexNap manufacturing business and continued raw material shortage impacting piece out work, KGP will be performing a reduction in force affecting employment at the Warsaw, Indiana, manufacturing locations of KGP Telecommunications.”
Any remaining employees and FlexNap manufacturing business and piece out work will be done remotely or at KGP’s other facilities, the letter said.
The front entrance doors were locked Friday afternoon, Sept. 9, and there were only a few vehicles in the parking lot at the southeast corner of CR 350N and Ind. 15.
KGPCo in Warsaw was one of 15 distribution and integration facilities across the United States, according to its website.
Phone messages left with two extensions at the Warsaw plant and at the corporate headquarters in Minnesota on Sept. 9 were not returned.
A person at the front desk earlier this week said she had no comment and to contact corporate.
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer said he spoke with the company official on Friday and that the company and state are working to set up a job fair and other services to assist employees.
"It’s not a good time of year for these families the way inflation is affecting everybody,” Thallemer said. “I feel like with the opportunities that exist in this community these folks can hopefully be retrained and rehired as quickly as possible.”
The company is a supplier of communications equipment with a focus on wireless and broadband cable products, according to its website.
According to a report by Inside Indiana Business, the company announced expansion plans in 2015 that would add 140 jobs at the Warsaw plant.
KGP has been in operation in Warsaw since its acquisition of EMBARQ Logistics in 2009, the report said.
