WINONA LAKE  – Grace’s men’s soccer earned a 0-0 draw with the University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday night.

The newly minted No. 18 Lancers (4-0-3) hosted the No. 16 Racers in a top 20 showdown at 1st Source Bank Field.

UNOH (4-0-2) was coming off a 2-1 victory of Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday night.

The game was hotly contested throughout the entire 90 minutes, but neither team could find a goal.

The opening 10 minutes of action passed without much fanfare, before the chances began to come in bunches.

The Lancers were awarded a corner and Diogo Lopes corralled the pass and nearly snuck the ball inside the far post.

UNOH answered back almost immediately, with a chance of their own but Matteo Conci was up to the task for the point-blank shot.

Grace took advantage of UNOH’s aggressive attack with a long clearing pass that nearly ended in a Racers’ own goal.

Martim Sequeira’s quick pace forced the Racers defense into an ill-advised pass back to goal. The pass bounced over the UNOH keeper and off the crossbar before bouncing back to Sequeira.

The senior forward immediately put another shot on goal that rebounded off the goalie and to the feet of Joao Sousa who had his close range shot sail just high.

Scanferlato Simone again threatened to put the Lancers ahead, but the Racer goalie held the game even.

Following a skilled run-on goal by a Racer forward, Conci made a diving effort to redirect the ball wide of the net as the game ticked under 10 minutes remaining in the opening frame.

Conci made one last save to end the half as the game went to intermission with both teams still scoreless.

Both teams attempted nine shots in the opening half and each goalie was busy from the onset, making four saves apiece.

As the second half got underway, it became a physical affair. The game ended with six yellow cards and numerous warnings for aggressive tackles.

Sequeira tried to spark the Lancers offense with a chance early in the second, but he could not find goal on his attempt.

Grace had numerous chances taken away by UNOH’s aggressive goalkeeper who played well out of his net throughout the night, which limited the Lancers’ counter attack opportunities.

UNOH’s best chance of the second half came off of a corner kick opportunity at the midpoint of the half. The well-placed cross off the corner led to a curling shot that was pushed wide by Conci at the last possible second.

With 10 minutes left in the half, Simone crossed a ball to Felipe Gruber who headed the ball toward goal, but his attempt was thwarted by the Racer keeper as the game’s waning moments passed ending the contest in a scoreless draw.

UNOH outshot Grace 19-14 and both teams were whistled for 10 fouls each. Conci made six saves in his start.

The Lancers have now faced five opponents who were in the NAIA Top 25 coaches’ poll and have yet to suffer a defeat.

Grace’s next test will be on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. as the Lancers travel to Missouri to take on No. 4 Columbia.

Moriarty's last-minute goal ties No. 10 Fire

LAKELAND, Fla. - In a fitting result for a pair of top teams, No. 23 Grace’s women’s soccer team tied No. 10 Southeastern on Saturday 1-1.

Danae Moriarty secured the draw with a dramatic, last-minute goal.

With seconds on the clock, Lea Moessinger squeezed a pass through traffic to Janni Bettin. Bettin’s cross was put into a dangerous position in front of the goal, and Moriarty poked the ball into the net.

The Lady Lancers (4-0-1) remain unbeaten on the season after tying the top-10 Fire on the road.

Grace finished the game with a slight 13-12 advantage in shot attempts. Only two of the Fire’s attempts were on frame, while Grace had five shots on goal.

Madison Tuma was active in the first half. She tried an ambitious shot in the early minutes that whizzed wide of goal.

Tuma also tried a glancing header that missed the goal frame; she was set up by a well-placed chipped pass by Lucy Schmitt.

Twenty minutes into the game, Tuma made a weaving run at SEU’s goal and was fouled. JJ Aalbue delivered a line drive shot on her free kick that was saved by the Fire’s goalkeeper.

Grace continued to apply pressure, taking six shots on the Fire’s net. The Lady Lancers’ possession had several dangerous stretches that produced attempts.

Aalbue tried another free kick 10 minutes later that went wide of the goal.

Grace had a few dangerous advances in the closing minutes of the half but could not generate a shot from those moments.

The teams entered halftime scoreless. Grace had the advantage in scoring chances, with a 7-3 shot advantage.

The Fire came out of halftime aggressively, trying two shots with a corner kick in the first five minutes.

But Grace responded and looked increasingly dangerous on the wings.

However, Southeastern finally broke the scoreless match with a goal against the run of play. The Fire tried a looping shot with 22 minutes left that snuck under the crossbar for the opening goal.

In the final eight minutes, Grace made run after run at the Fire’s goal in an attempt of an equalizer.

Grace’s best chances came from Moriarty, who tried a pair of shots from outside the penalty box. Luna Gianotti also tried a long shot that missed the mark.

But Grace had the final say with Bettin’s cross being finished by Moriarty in the last minute.

Libby Stratton made one save in goal, and she was protected well by Simone Castaneda, Gianotti, Kimberly Aalbue, Amber Meade, Lilli Oberhoff and Schmitt.

Next week, the Lady Lancers will travel to Missouri for a pair of matches against Stephens and No. 16 Columbia.
