WARSAW - The Warsaw Tigers boys’ soccer side jumped ahead 1-0 on striker Eduardo Escutia’s goal at the third minute and maintained their sense of urgency deep into last night’s match for an insurance goal by Tito Sanchez (71’) in a 2-0 win over the 10th-ranked Penn Kingsmen at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

Sanchez was one-on-one at the center of the net 25 meters away when he drilled an assist from Callen O’Brien into the left corner of the net far from the outstretched arms of Penn goalkeeper Rafael Ferreira.

The 2-0 lead gave the Tigers a bit more breathing room, and the capacity crowd’s roar was followed by a collective and audible sigh.

The catalyst for the second score was junior striker Matt Marsh, whose continued intensity and sense of urgency was visible in his choice to fight for the ball instead of stepping back to contain Kingsmen defenders when they took control of the ball.

Marsh’s crisp pass from the left wing to O’Brien was the genesis of the scoring play.

“Marsh is one of the strikers that when we need to pressure high, we put him in,” Warsaw head coach Ryan Burgher noted. “I think most people would have stopped pressure in there. We wanted to run that ball back and I think that goal was all because of him 'cause he kept going after it.”

Marsh didn’t just turn up the heat at the 71st minute. He fought Penn defenders on each trip downfield for several minutes before the goal.

“…pressure, pressure, pressure,” Burgher continued regarding Marsh’s unrelenting playing style. “(We) got it to Tito (Sanchez). (If) you have to go one-on-one with somebody in the middle like (Sanchez) it's not a good situation for the other team.”

Each sides’ defenders and goalkeepers had a solid showing, and Penn kept Warsaw goalkeeper Nehemiah Wright remarkably busy attacking from long and short range. The senior worked hard to earn last night’s shutout.

Wright’s most athletic save came from a one-on-one shot late in the first half by Penn midfielder Eric Johnson. The junior Kingsman drilled a shot headed just below the crossbar when Wright leapt high with two hands in a triangle and the ball careened far above and over the goal.

“Nehemiah Wright did a great job,” Burgher said. “He made some big saves, (coming) out really well because they were playing some direct balls, and some long balls, so he did a really great job of coming out and winning those for us.”

The match was physical, fast-paced, and it showcased the strength and depth of Tiger defenders among Dennis Hernandez, Nathan Dailey, Marcelo Cuahuizo, and Braydon Bussard.

Senior Benji Rodriguez and junior Knox Ritter also contributed fresh legs and solid play for the Tiger side.

The high caliber of non-conference competition is something Burgher plans for his team to face each season. The Tigers occasionally fared on the wrong side of the score in prior seasons, but this season, wins continue to result from these tough trials.

“We just wanted to test ourselves,” Burgher said. “We look at these games… our goal again - and I repeat myself all the time - is to win conference, and then also to win sectionals. These games are just measuring sticks for us.”

Thursday night’s victory tasted even sweeter because it came from an intense battle with a high school whose enrollment is among Indiana’s largest. Those big numbers contribute to athletic success among almost all sports in which Penn competes.

“When you can come out and beat Penn in anything, that's a huge, huge win so it's really nice,” Burgher remarked.

The junior varsity Tigers surrendered a goal at the 69th minute resulting in a 2-2 tie. Miguel Cacahua and Isaac Enciso scored for Warsaw. The Tiger C-team shut out Penn 5-0 on two goals from Mydin Burgher, Santiago Gardese, Noah Caughell. Goalkeeper Gahel Nocleto earned the shutout.

Warsaw (10-0-1, 3-0 in the conference) returns to league action Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. against the NorthWood Panthers (4-2-1, 0-2-1) who are looking for their first Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) win.
