Goshen Holds Off Wawasee In Rivalry Game

The Warriors trailed Goshen 14-0 at halftime and roared back to within 21-18 in the second half before falling 28-18.
Wawasee fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the NLC while Goshen moved to 1-2 and 1-0 and took the traveling War-Hawk Trophy.
A 28-yard touchdown run by senior Cameron Zimmerman and 2-point run by senior Jaxon Brown at 11:27 of the fourth quarter got the Warriors to within 21-18.
Goshen got a 1-yard TD run and extra-point boot by Andeyv Ramirez with 2:55 to go to make it 28-18.
On the ensuing kickoff, junior Hunter Tinkey dashed 65 yards to the RedHawk 24. But the rally was squelched on a lost Wawasee fumble. It was the Warriors’ third turnover on a night that also featured six penalties for 44 yards.
“We had too many mistakes — too many turnovers, too many penalties, too many big plays on third down,” said Wawasee coach Jon Reutebuch. “That’s the bottom line.”
The Warriors mixed their offensive looks, including using a T-formation in the first half.
“We were able to move the ball really well,” said Reutebuch. “We were just getting in our own way. We’d get a big penalty or turn the ball over when we were in the brink of punching it in.
“We’ve just got to clean that stuff up and we’ll be a hard team to beat.
“We just keep focusing and you keep trying to get better. Keep the guys positive.”
Zimmerman’s 81-yard run and Tinkey’s 2-point conversion run made the score 21-10 at 3:33 of the third quarter.
Goshen went ahead 21-2 on a 42-yard pass from Bechtel to Noah Alford and Ramirez kick at 5:54. That came moments after an interception and return by RedHawk Eliot Frey.
Wawasee’s first points came at 8:24 of the third quarter. A sack by junior Donovan Blair and fumble through the end zone resulted in a safety.
Goshen got a 17-yard scoring pass from Bechtel to Alford and Bechtel 2-point run at 1:35 of the second quarter.
The RedHawks found the end zone first at 6:53 of the first quarter on a 10-yard run by Drew Elliot. The kick was blocked.
The game featured 16 penalties — nine for 75 yards against Goshen and six for 44 against Wawasee.
On a night when the Warriors gained 178 rushing yards with 11 of 14 first downs coming on the ground, Zimmerman gained 140, junior Brandon Kelly 40 and Brown 18.
Brown connected on 11-of-16 passes for 78 yards, including three for 40 to Blair.
Wawasee senior kicker Tim Bolt missed a 36-yard field goal attempt in the first half. He also produced several long punts.
Elliot (120 yards) and Bechtel (55) were Goshen rushing leaders. He completed 11-of-13 passes for 140 yards.
“It’s awesome for the work these guys put in to come out here and have a win,” said Goshen coach Tom Wogomon, who was Warriors head coach 2007-12. “We’ve got some work to do but Wawasee fought hard.
“There were times when they kept battling back. We gave them opportunities. The nice thing is we had some resolve in the end.”
The Friday, Sept. 9 slate includes Mishawaka at Goshen and Wawasee at Plymouth.
