WINONA LAKE – Grace College’s men’s basketball team started the season off in style with a 109-70 victory over Michigan Dearborn on Saturday night.

Grace started off the defense of its 2021-22 Crossroads League championship with a shooting performance for the ages. The Lancers 66 percent from the floor and 47 percent from three on their way to a 39-point victory.

Cade Gibbs led the way for Grace as he was one of two Lancers to top 20 points on the night. Ian Scott scored 21 points on a near perfect day from the field (7-8).

Elijah Malone scored Grace’s first bucket and Lancers opened the game on a 10-0 run in front of a packed Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

Grace’s scoring run was momentarily quelled by a Wolverine’s 3-point basket, but Jakob Gibbs answered right back with a trifecta of his own.

Grace’s lead hovered around 12 points for the remainder of the half as the Wolverines seemed to settle into the game.

Grace ignited the energetic crowd throughout the night with a slew of highlight reel dunks, as they put on display their elite athleticism.

Scott made a pair of free throws and Cade Gibbs added a late basket as Grace carried a 50-37 lead into halftime.

Brycen Graber opened the second half with a made 3-point shot that turned out to be just a sign of things to come for Grace. The Lancers went unconscious from the field in the second half shooting 79 percent from the floor.

Davidson followed up Graber’s trifecta with one of his own as Grace began to distance itself from Dearborn.

Malone sank two free throws and Jakob Gibbs scored a jumper that moved the Lancers ahead by 23 points.

Graber hit a trifecta and Marcus Davidson added a layup as Grace opened their lead up to 42 points.

Grace head coach Scott Moore emptied his bench late in the game as the Lancers coasted to the 109-70 victory.

Grace held Michigan Dearborn to 36 percent from the field and 31 percent from 3-point land.

Graber ended the day with 7 points, 8 assists and 3 steals. Davidson had 19 points and Wadding added 10 points of his own.

The Lancers are next in action on Tuesday when they host St. Xavier at 8 p.m.



Lady?Lancers Open Season With Dominant Win

WINONA LAKE – Grace’s women’s basketball used a combination of suffocating defense and a blistering shooting percentage to run away with a 93-51 victory over Michigan Dearborn on Saturday evening.

Karlee Feldman had a sterling performance as she stuffed the stat sheet in the season opening win. The junior forward finished with 28 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks.

After surrendering an early 3-point basket, Feldman scored the Lady Lancers’ first points of the season and Grace never looked back. Feldman scored six points as the Lady Lancers raced out to a 10-3 lead.

After missing last year due to injury, Kate Rulli checked into the game at the midpoint of the quarter and scored to push Grace’s lead to 12.

Newcomers Molly Long and Jenna Blakley teamed up for a basket late in the quarter and Grace took a commanding 16-point lead into the second quarter.

Kiersten Findley scored first for Grace in the second frame and the Lady Lancer’s suffocating defense helped extend their lead. The Wolverines were held without a made field goal for the first 9:35 of the quarter.

Maddie Ryman scored a quick seven-points for Grace and Feldman poured in another basket as Grace pushed their lead as high as 30.

Kate Schlatter and Bekah Marshall knocked in back-to-back free throws and Kaylee Patton hit from beyond the arc to send Grace into the half with a 44-19 lead.

Nine Lady Lancers registered points in the first half and Feldman and Ryman both topped double digits. Ryman nabbed three steals.

Grace scored 22 points in the paint and held a 25-20 advantage on the boards.

In the second half the Lady Lancers continued to assert their dominance on the Wolverines. Grace scored on 11 of their first 12 possessions to start the third quarter.

Feldman was a force in the quarter with 8 points, 3 blocks and 3 rebounds. Blakley was a spark off the bench contributing five points.  Grace shot 65 percent in the quarter.

Blakey started the final frame by connecting on her first 3-point shot as a Lady Lancer.

Grace continued to pad their lead and a layup from Peyton Murphy followed by a score from Rulli pushed the Lady Lancers’ lead to its highest mark of the game at 45 and Grace played out the remaining minutes of a 93-51 lead.

12 players registered minutes in the game and five Lady Lancers scored in double digits. Grace outscored Dearborn 58-24 in the paint and won the rebounding margin by an impressive 52-33 mark. Grace shot 52 percent from the floor.

Rulli just missed a double-double with seven rebounds to go along with her 10 points. Findley had 12 points and Ryman added five steals.

“It’s always exciting to get that first win of the year,” said Grace head coach Dan Davis. “The thing that really stood out to me tonight was the depth and balance that we had as a team.  This is the kind of performance that we want to have as the season progresses.”

Grace will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Holy Cross at 6 p.m.



Voss Wins 200th As Grace Tops MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - No. 21 Grace’s women’s soccer team registered a key late-season-win, defeating Mt. Vernon Nazarene 1-0 on the road on Saturday.

The win moves the Lady Lancers (11-3-2, 6-2-1 Crossroads League) into third place in the league standings.

Grace and MVNU will meet again in the quarterfinals of next week’s CL Tournament. The match will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Grace’s 1st Source Bank Field. The men’s soccer squads between Grace and MVNU will also play their quarterfinal match on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The win was a personal milestone for Grace’s head coach Michael Voss. Voss registered his 200th career victory after Saturday’s victory. He is the all-time winningest coach in team history, amassing an overall record of 200-102-32 for his career.

The Lady Lancers controlled chances during the game with their patented possession. Grace finished with an 11-4 advantage in shots for the game.

Shots were hard to come by to begin the contest. Neither team tried a shot for the first 14 minutes of action.

MVNU earned a few shots first, but each attempt was saved by Sofia Lerro.

Grace’s first attempt on goal came with 20 minutes remaining in the half. Shortly afterward, JJ Aalbue had a chance with a free kick that did not miss the goal frame by much.

The Lady Lancers had another goal-scoring opportunity with five minutes remaining in the half. Aalbue stole the ball in the offensive end and quickly unleashed a low blast that clanged off the goal post.

Neither team scored in the first half with Grace holding a 6-3 edge in attempts.

The Lady Lancers dominated the game in the second half, limiting the Cougars to just one shot. In fact, MVNU shot only one time over the final 57 minutes of regulation.

The game-winning goal occurred 11 minutes into the second half. Luna Gianotti threw the ball into Aalbue. Aalbue spun past a defender and slashed a pass in front of goal.

Danae Moriarty beat her defender to the ball and scored from close range. Moriarty has a team-best 10 goals on the season.

The rest of the half belonged to the Lady Lancers. Grace’s possession gave MVNU no chance for an equalizer.

The Cougars were held without a shot or corner kick across the final 35 minutes of the contest.

Grace generated a few more chances, including shots from Aalbue and Marlene Menzel.

Lerro registered three saves for the shutout. She was protected well by Erin Crew, Lilli Oberhoff, Lucy Schmitt, Luna Gianotti and Simone Castaneda.
