First Half Explosion Fuels Lancers’ Victory

UPLAND, Ind. – Grace College’s men’s soccer team picked up a 5-0 win over Taylor on Saturday evening.

Martim Sequeira powered the Lancers offensive in the victory with a hat trick performance that brings his season goal total to 16.

The win puts Grace (9-1-5, 4-1-2 Crossroads League) in second place in the Crossroads League with just two games remaining in the season. The Lancers next contest will be against IWU (10-3-3, 4-2-1 CL) who sits just one point behind Grace.

The Lancers did not have to wait long to find their first marker of the game, striking just 5:07 into the game.

Juan Camilo Garcia sent a cross into the box, and after a failed clearing attempt from the Trojans (3-8-5,1-4-2 CL), David Marquez curled a shot past the keeper and into the corner of the net to draw first blood for Grace.

The Lancers kept up the offensive pressure as Nelu Calcai and Kyle Holwerda each put a shot on goal that forced a save from the Taylor keeper to keep his team's deficit at just one in the early stages.

Grace’s attack was suffocating as Taylor managed just one shot in the first half of action.

The Lancers threatened to extend their lead at the mid-point of the half as Daniel Santos Rosa and Felipe Gruber had a flurry of chances but each time they were denied goal.

Moments later Sequeira would net his first of three goals to double Grace’s lead. Frederik Christmann sent a long lead pass which found the senior forward in perfect stride. Sequeira put the ball into the net with a perfect touch, putting the Lancers ahead 2-0 with 14 minutes left in the half.

The Lancers were not finished there however, as they would find the goal three more times before the intermission.

Grace’s third goal came after Sequeira settled a bouncing ball and slid a pass to Santos Rosa who sliced the ball into the net from 18 yards away.

Sequeira added to the scoring barrage with his second of the game. The Lancers were awarded a corner kick and Flavio Cruz played it into the box as Sequeira capitalized with Grace’s fourth goal.

Sequeira put the finishing touches on his three-goal outburst with a long run to beat a defender before finishing with confidence to put Grace ahead 5-0 heading into halftime. The Lancers final four goals of the half came in a span of just 9:27.

Grace continued to control the pace in the second half, but with a five goal lead the urgency for goal was subdued.

Grace would try seven shots in the final frame but did not extend on their five-goal advantage.

The Lancers out shot the Trojans 24-5 in the game and held a 6-2 corner kick advantage. Grace was whistled for 18 fouls in the contest compared to Taylor’s four.

Matteo Conci made three saves in the win and also tallied his eighth clean sheet of the season.

Grace will close out the regular season with a pair of home contests. The Lancers will host IWU on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a game that will have major implications in the Crossroads League standings.

Grace will wrap up the schedule with senior night next Saturday against Mt. Vernon.



Lady Lancers Rally For Dramatic Five-Set Win

WINONA LAKE - Saturday’s match between Grace’s volleyball team and Spring Arbor went down to the wire.

Grace showed resilience, twice battling back from one-set deficits to rally for a 3-2 victory at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The win guarantees Grace’s spot in the Crossroads League Tournament with three matches yet to play. The Lady Lancers (10-19, 5-10 CL) can finish anywhere from No. 6-8 depending on next week’s results.

Grace racked up 23 more kills, 22 more assists and 3 more aces than the Cougars in a wild back-and-forth affair.

In the opening set, Spring Arbor pushed ahead early and led for most of the set. Grace managed to even the score at 18-18 after three straight kills from Morgan Syoen, Alisha Leffring and Cassadi Colbert.

But the Cougars quickly squelched Grace’s run, winning seven of the next eight points to claim the opener 25-19.

Grace jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set, but the Cougars stayed within range. SAU rattled off five straight points to turn a four-point Grace lead into an 18-17 advantage for SAU.

Colbert came up huge for Grace down the stretch, however. The outside hitter pounded out three kills over the final rallies as Grace evened the match with a 25-21 win.

The Cougars won by eight in the third set despite having just six kills. Grace had 13 kills in comparison, but the Lady Lancers also had 12 attack errors.

Facing a must-win fourth set, Grace showed no signs of fear. The Lady Lancers stormed in front by scoring the first eight points of the set. Grace pushed its lead to 14-1 as SAU could find no answers to the Lady Lancers’ play. Livia Tate had three kills during Grace’s early charge.

Grace rolled away to a 25-11 win, sending the match to a winner-take-all fifth set.

The Lady Lancers’ momentum carried into the fifth set. Grace won the first four points, sparked by an ace from Emma Blackford and kills from Jadyn Block and Leffring.

Grace pushed ahead 6-1, but SAU was not prepared to go down without a fight. The Cougars tallied five unanswered points to slice the Lady Lancers’ lead down to one at 12-11.

But after a timeout, Colbert came up with a much-needed kill to turn the tide. Swanson followed up with another kill, and Swanson teamed up with Tate for a block point on the final play to win the match 15-11.

Tate impressed with 13 kills on a .400 percentage, adding three block assists. Colbert tied for match honors with 13 kills.

Leffring had 12 kills, Block notched 11 kills with two block assists, and Syoen added 30 assists, 9 digs and 5 kills.

Defensively, Grace put four players in double-digit digs; Liz Schmidt led all players with 19 digs, Grace Erwin had 17 digs, 6 assists and 2 aces, Paige Vander Goot had 11 digs with three aces, and McKenzie Stakely added 10 digs.

Swanson had a well-rounded performance with 7 kills, 8 digs and 2 block assists, Blackford served up three aces, and Riley Owens had 13 assists and nine digs.

The Lady Lancers hit the road on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match at No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan. Grace then ends the regular season with home matches on Friday at 7 p.m. against Mt. Vernon Nazarene and Saturday at 3 p.m. against Huntington.

The match was Grace’s home regular-season finale at 1st Source Bank Field. Grace still owns control of fourth place in the Crossroads League season with one week left in the regular season. The top-four seeds in the league will host a quarterfinal match in the CL Tournament.

The regular season will end next week with a pair of road games for Grace. On Wednesday, Grace will travel to No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan. On Saturday, Grace will play at Mt. Vernon Nazarene.

During Saturday’s matchup with Taylor, the Lady Lancers (9-3-2, 4-2-1 CL) owned control for large chunks of the match. Grace finished with a 15-9 edge in shots, including firing off 12 shots in a commanding second-half performance.

The match began with quick ball movement but few chances. Neither side had a shot for the first eight minutes.

The first shot came from Taylor as the Trojans nearly capitalized on Grace’s defensive miscue. But Erin Crew made a sliding challenge to deny a goal-scoring chance for TU.

Grace struggled to build its usual possession attack for the first 15 minutes of the half; Taylor’s pressure prevented Grace from finding its normal fluidity on the ball.

Grace’s possession improved, however, as the half wore on. Danae Moriarty had Grace’s first chance when she sliced into the penalty box and had a shot saved.

Madison Tuma also found space for a shot from distance that went wide.

The opening goal was sparked by Moriarty. The crafty winger beat her defender along the left side of the field. She crossed a pass in front of goal toward Marlene Menzel, and Menzel finished cleanly on her first touch to put Grace ahead.

The Lady Lancers remained on their front foot, keeping pressure applied on Taylor’s defense. The physicality of the match increased as the half continued as well. Grace had a penalty kick appeal turned down as Tuma fell in the box under pressure.

Taylor managed to even the game against the run of play. The Trojans flicked a ball into the air, stunning Grace as the ball dipped just beneath the crossbar to make the score 1-1.

The match entered halftime locked at 1-1. The teams combined for just eight shots over the first 45 minutes.

Grace had several strong build-ups to begin the second half but could not find a quick goal. Taylor defended for most of the second half, handling early shots from Menzel, Tuma and Lilli Oberhoff.

Two more attempts for Grace also went high, including shots from JJ Aalbue and Tuma.

The Trojans could not find much time on the ball as Grace had the first eight shots of the second half. Taylor’s first attempt came after 25 minutes of the half had expired.

The final 10 minutes saw Taylor absorb even more pressure. Moriarty and Aalbue both tried hard shots in the closing minutes that did not score.
