WINONA LAKE - A lone goal from Danae Moriarty separated Grace’s women’s soccer team from Bethel on Saturday.

The No. 20 Lady Lancers outshot Bethel 23-3, but Moriarty’s goal made the difference in a 1-0 victory.

Grace (9-3-1, 4-2 Crossroads League) was in clear control throughout the match, forcing Bethel into a defensive shell. The Pilots (5-5-4, 1-4-1 CL) absorbed pressure for most of the evening but eventually fell after Moriarty’s finish.

The first half saw a regular theme emerge – Grace possessed the ball and moved consistently into the attacking half of the field.

But Bethel defended well with numbers. Despite Grace owning the majority of possession in the half and creating dangerous moments, the Lady Lancers were held to six shots before halftime.

Grace had multiple headers that could have scored, including ones from Madison Tuma, Ashley VandenBoom and Marlene Menzel.

JJ Aalbue and Danae Moriarty also had attempts in the first half that were denied.

The Pilots’ offense consisted of a few counterattacks, one of which resulted in a close headed effort during the opening minutes.

The second half was a complete takeover by the Lady Lancers. Grace outshot Bethel 17-0 and gave the Pilots very little time on the ball.

The Lady Lancers attacked aggressively in the second half, firing off four shots across the first six minutes.

The game-winning moment came not long afterwards in the 57th minute. Kailey Burrell made a strong run along the left side of the field as she shed a few defenders. She put a low cross in front of the face of the goal, and Moriarty slid and redirected the ball into the net.

Grace was not content to sit on its lead and continued to direct the match. The Lady Lancers sent wave after wave of attacks at Bethel’s goal, producing close misses from Tuma, Aalbue and VandenBoom.

VandenBoom was very active off the bench, registering six shots in the match. She had two great chances in the final minute, but Bethel’s defense made some strong last-ditch defending to prevent her shots from crossing the goal line.

The Lady Lancers finished the match ahead 23-3 in shots and 8-0 in shots on goal. Grace also had the only eight corner kicks of the contest.

Libby Stratton did not need to make a save in her shutout; she was protected well by Erin Crew, Luna Gianotti, Lilli Oberhoff, Simone Castaneda and Lucy Schmitt.

Grace now has seven shutouts across its 13 matches.

Saturday was also Senior Night as Grace recognized its 13-player graduating class.

The Lady Lancers will host Taylor next week on Saturday in their next league matchup. It will be the regular season home finale for Grace with just three matches remaining.

Lancers Falter For First Time This Season

MISHAWAKA – Grace’s men’s soccer came up just short in a battle of top-10 teams, falling to No. 9 Bethel 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday’s contest was also a battle between the top-two teams in the Crossroads League, with Grace (8-1-5, 3-1-2 CL) and Bethel (13-1-1, 6-0 CL) sitting atop the conference standings.

It is the first time that the Lancers have lost this season, after setting a new program record for an unbeaten streak to start a season at 13 games.

Both teams started off slow offensively, with each team managing just one shot apiece through the first 20-minutes of action.

Diogo Lopes had a try on goal after a Lancers’ corner kick, but his shot was stopped short of goal by the Pilot goalie.

The physical play between the two top programs drew a pair of yellow cards and 13 total fouls in the first half.

The Lancers had one last chance on goal late in the first half courtesy of Francesco Papa, but once again Grace was denied the goal as the game entered the half still scoreless.

Grace had three shots by the intermission, compared to four for Bethel.

After the first 63-minutes of the game passed scoreless, Bethel would jump out to a two-goal lead in the blink of an eye. The Pilots drew first blood 18-minutes into the second half and doubled their lead 2:18 later.

Down a pair of goals for just the second time this season, Grace regained their composure and began to press for their first marker of the game.

The Lancers had a trio of corner kicks and Daniel Santos Rosa had a shot on goal but Grace was unable to solve the Pilot keeper.

With under five-minutes left Martim Sequeira carried the ball down the right side of the field and sent a dangerous cross into the box. Before the ball could find the foot of an attacking Lancer a Bethel player tried to clear the ball from danger, but inadvertently put the ball in his own net.

Grace tried to muster one last charge as they sought to find the equalizing goal, but ran short of time as they suffered their first defeat of the season.

Grace was out shot in the game 11-5 but held a 9-5 corner advantage. Matteo Conci made four saves in the start.

The Lancers will have a week off before traveling to Taylor for a 6 p.m. kickoff next Saturday.
